Glycerin suppository – what is it?

A glycerin suppository is a mildly laxative agent used rectally. It contains glycerin, which irritates the lower part of the large intestine. Thanks to the glycerin suppository, the fecal mass is able to move around. In addition, said lower intestine becomes better moisturized and greased, so it leaves the intestinal contents more easily.

Glycerin suppository – for whom?

Glycerin suppository is a medicine for people of all ages. The pharmacies offer both suppositories for adults and children, including infants. There are also glycerin suppositories for the elderly and people who are permanently immobile, e.g. due to disability and severe diseases. Glycerin suppositories are often used by pregnant and puerperal women.

As already mentioned, glycerin suppositories can be used by people of all ages having problems with bowel movements. However, the dose should be selected appropriately and suppositories should not be used more often than necessary. Children usually take 1 gram suppositories; adults – 2 grams. For children aged 1-3, the suppository should be sliced ​​lengthwise. Children aged 3-6 should take a maximum of 2 suppositories at a time per night.

Glycerin suppositories – contraindications

Glycerin suppositories should not be taken by people who are allergic to any of the ingredients of the drug. They are also not intended for people suffering from rectal cancer and any rectal diseases. It is worth knowing that suppositories sometimes weaken the effect of other drugs also used rectally, so you have to wait a few hours before applying the next agent.

Glycerin suppositories can harm people suffering from colitis and small intestine. They should not be used by people with acute abdominal pain, appendicitis, pathological impurities in the stool, e.g. mucus, blood, long-term constipation of unknown causes. A patient using other drugs absorbed through the rectum should consult a specialist about the use of glycerin suppositories.

Glycerin suppositories – application

Before applying the suppository, it is advisable to defecate and wash your hands with warm water and soap. If the application of the suppository is uncomfortable for you, you can wear disposable gloves or a finger guard. If the suppository is too soft, place it under cold water for a few seconds. The glycerin suppository should be gently removed from the foil or plastic so as not to damage it.

The glycerin suppository should be slowly inserted into the anus gently parted with the fingers. The muscles should be relaxed during application, otherwise it will be difficult to insert the suppository. Hands should be washed again after taking the medicine. The person to whom the suppository is applied should either lie on their back with their legs raised or lie on their side with their legs slightly tucked under their chest.

The glycerin suppository will melt under the influence of human body temperature, provided that it is made on a fatty basis. The medicine may also dissolve in the fluid in the rectum. It is absorbed through the mucosa and therefore can affect the entire body. The application of the drug can be improved by applying a moisturizing gel to the tip of the suppository or by immersing it in water – it is inadvisable to moisten it with oils or petroleum jelly.

How to apply a glycerin suppository to a child?

When you store the glycerin suppository in a refrigerator or other cool place, warm the medicine, e.g. in your hands, before applying it to your child. You can lay your toddler on his side and bend his legs to the stomach or place him on his knees on the stomach so that the legs hang freely. Thanks to such positions, the application of the drug will be easier. The suppository should be inserted with a gentle but firm movement and squeezed the baby’s buttocks.

Glycerin suppositories in pregnancy

Glycerin suppositories during pregnancy should be reached by women who actually have problems with defecation. Otherwise you run the risk of your body getting used to the medicine. It is also worth knowing that pregnant women react differently to such measures and may result in abdominal cramps and pains. A woman who decides to use glycerin suppositories during pregnancy should purchase special suppositories for pregnant women.

In order to avoid the need to use glycerin suppositories during pregnancy, it is worth working in accordance with the biological clock, not eating at night and making sure that the diet includes fiber-containing products, e.g. fresh fruit, vegetables, bread and cereals. It is inadvisable to eat meals in a hurry or standing up. It is also worth drinking 6 to 8 glasses of non-carbonated mineral water every day.

Bisacodyl suppository – what is it?

Bisacodyl and glycerol suppositories are laxatives, but belong to different groups. Bisacadol acts directly on the mucosa and submucosa and nerve plexuses of the large intestine mucosa. This causes it to stimulate intestinal peristalsis and the absorption of electrolytes, so the faeces become more watery. Bisacadol is excreted in the faeces and a small amount is found in the systemic circulation.
