The test measures S-transferases – detoxifying enzymes found in liver cells. The isoenzyme α-GST is present in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, and α-GST – in the epithelial cells of the bile ducts. When hepatic cells are damaged, the enzyme α-GST is released into the blood serum. On the other hand, in the case of biliary obstruction, serum concentration of α-GST increases.
When do we do the GST test?
The most common indications for a glutathione s-transferase test:
1. Damage to hepatocytes (viral inflammation, hypoxia).
2. Suspicion of biliary obstruction.
The course of the GST study
Material for the GST test: serum.
Preparation for the GST test: on an empty stomach (at least 8 hours).
The course of the study: one-time blood sampling from a vein in the arm.
Time to wait for the result: 1 Day.
Standards: α-GST below 7,5 µg / l, π-GST below 100 µg / l, in bile below 15 µg / l.
Comments: The determination of both forms of the enzyme in serum can differentiate the cause of liver damage.
