In our world it is difficult to find a person, even a very small one, who would not be familiar with this flower. Already first-graders have a good idea of what gladioli are, but if they knew how many varieties of these flowers exist in the world, they would be very surprised. Probably, no flower has such an endless variety in the color of the inflorescences themselves. After all, gladioli are even green and brown, gray and almost black. And what is especially interesting is that Our Country currently occupies a leading position in the world in breeding work with gladioli, especially with large-flowered varieties.
This article will show a wide variety of gladioli, photos of which you can see here. Of the thousands of existing varieties, the best ones were selected, according to the reviews of flower growers who have been breeding these chic flowers for more than a year.
Gladiolus classifications
Like many other flowers, gladioli are very diverse. New colorful varieties emerge every year. In them already now it is possible to get completely confused by an ignorant person. To facilitate this process, several classifications of these colors were invented, which formed the basis of a special nomenclature with which experienced flower growers can easily determine the basic data of a particular variety.
First of all, gladioli differ in terms of flowering. Distinguish:
Color group name | How many days can pass after planting before the appearance of inflorescences |
---|---|
Rannie, d | About 72 days |
Srednerannie, sr | About 77 days |
Medium, with | About 83 days |
Middle-late, sp | About 88 days |
Late, p | About 95 days |
Gladiolus can also differ in the diameter of one flower in the inflorescence. On this basis, five different flower sizes are distinguished.
When describing varieties of gladioli, after the name, the first place is always a number of three digits. The first number just tells about the size of the flower:
- Miniature flowers, less than 6 cm in size.
- Small flowers, 6 to 9 cm in diameter.
- Medium flowers, the size of which ranges between 9 and 11 cm.
- Fairly large flowers, with a diameter of 11 to 14 cm.
- Very large flowers, the diameter of which exceeds 14 cm.
The last two digits in this number describe the main color, shade and various features of the patterns in the color of the flower. There are 11 primary colors to describe the color, including white. The descriptions of the most beautiful varieties of gladiolus that follow will be arranged according to the primary colors that exist in the classification of these colors.
The nomenclature usually also indicates data on the inflorescence: how many flowers are formed in it, and data on how many flowers can be fully opened at the same time are given through a slash. Often the height of the plant is also indicated.
In addition, gladioli can vary in the degree of corrugation of their petals. To describe this, there are five gradations, from non-corrugated (ng) to super-corrugated (ssg). The nomenclature of each variety must also indicate the year of registration of the variety and the name of the breeder.
Descriptions of varieties with photos
Below will be presented the best varieties of gladioli, both in their beauty and in their unpretentiousness in cultivation, ease of propagation, good and powerful growth. Most of them are gladiolus varieties of selection, since it was they who showed the best adaptability to difficult climatic conditions. In addition, as noted above, in terms of the beauty and variety of varieties of large-flowered gladiolus, breeders have no competitors.

Undersized gladioli
Already about a hundred years ago, interesting undersized varieties of gladioli were bred in Holland. In height, these flowers usually do not exceed 40-60 cm. Of course, in terms of the beauty of the inflorescences, they are not as spectacular as their large-flowered counterparts, but they have enough other advantages that allow flower growers to be happy to grow them on their site.
- These flowers are distinguished by greater endurance and unpretentiousness. In the southern regions of Our Country, undersized gladioli can not even be dug up for the winter and left to winter directly in the open field.
- Dwarf gladioli bloom much earlier – already in June you can admire their colorful inflorescences.
- Due to their short stature, the flowers do not need support, which means there is no need to tie them up.
- They go well with other flowers and fit more organically into various flower arrangements in flower beds.
One of the most famous and popular varieties in Our Country is currently Nymph, or Nymph, a photo of the flowers of which can be seen below.
The Peach Flower also looks good, captivating with the tenderness of its inflorescences.
Often undersized gladioli are sold in Our Country in sets of a mixture of varieties, so it is rather difficult to identify other varieties.
From all of the above, it becomes quite easy to understand that gladioli are beautiful and diverse in color and shape flowers, among which everyone can choose something to their liking.
