When deterring mosquitoes or other biting insects, you must not forget about your health – appeals the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate. Sanepid also reminds that in Poland there is no risk of contracting a dangerous infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes regularly present in our territory.

“Biocidal products that we use in the summer: during a walk, during a barbecue, on vacation, used improperly, or purchased from unreliable sellers, may not only work improperly, but also pose a health risk” – emphasizes GIS.

The Sanitary Inspectorate advises that when buying products called repellants, pay attention to whether the product has a marketing authorization – and therefore whether it is tested, safe and effective.

The authorization can be found on the product label, but also on the official list. All instructions for use, precautions, effective time and expiry date should be on the package.

The mosquito can transmit dangerous parasites. How to outsmart him?

«Do not spray more than the manufacturer recommends and check that any of the ingredients do not sensitize you. When you get home, you no longer need to scare away insects: wash your spilled areas and hands thoroughly »recommends the GIS.

The Sanitary Inspectorate notes that despite the lack of risk of an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes, large clusters of these insects may be a nuisance for people and animals from floodplains.

The inspectorate recommends avoiding the presence of outdoors when mosquitoes are most active (morning and evening); wearing clothes with long sleeves and legs; the use of mechanical barriers in windows and doors (insect nets or mosquito nets) and the use of mosquito repellent preparations.

These remedies come in a variety of forms. These are, for example, repellants to be applied directly to clothes or skin (in the form of a spray, liquid, milk, cream, gel or wipes) and electrofumigators (devices intended for rooms that are placed in an electrical socket). Spirals and sticks impregnated with a mosquito repellent will be useful; insecticide lamps and spray or mist liquids.

Poland is a country with a temperate transitional climate. The prevailing conditions – temperature amplitude and humidity – are insufficient for the development of species of these insects that occur in other regions of the world (e.g. in Africa, Asia, America) and there are the cause of many infectious diseases (including malaria, yellow fever or Dengue fever).

“In the present flood situation of Poland, the huge floodplains of river waters will undoubtedly fall for a long time and, as stagnant water, they will be places for mosquitoes to multiply. (…) Despite this, at present there is no risk of contracting any dangerous infectious disease in Poland, transmitted by mosquitoes regularly occurring in our territory, even if their number is multiplied »- says the Department of Health and Safety.
