Nowadays, the owners of private houses have become increasingly fenced off from their neighbors with huge fences of various shapes. But what if there is no money for a spectacular fence, but you want to fence your possessions in some elegant way? As an option – a hedge, and the easiest way to implement this plan is with the help of girlish grapes. It is this plant that will be discussed in the article, in particular about reproduction and how to use it to make hedges. Reproduction of girlish grapes can be carried out in several ways at once: cuttings, layering, seeds.
Cuttings
The most suitable time is spring or autumn, regardless of the method chosen. Reproduction of girlish grapes by cuttings is the easiest way, because getting the material for it is not difficult and financially expensive. First you need to prepare small cuttings as thick as a little finger, maybe even thinner, and a little more than 20 cm long, leave a few buds on each, preferably no more than five, but it would be nice to make sure that the buds are not dried up and can develop.
Then we dig the cuttings in the ground, for this we need small holes – about ten centimeters, so that two buds remain on the surface, and the rest are in the soil. For the first time after landing, it is recommended to build a small shade. It is not necessary to use fertilizer when planting, because the cuttings are well accepted in almost any soil, but you can water them periodically until you are 100% sure that they have started.
Layers
Reproduction by layering is also a fairly convenient way to increase the number of girlish grape plants at home, because over time a lot of root shoots appear, which will serve as the beginning for new plants. But you need to follow certain rules.
In particular, you take a lash of a plant and drop it in the place where there are buds. after a while they will begin to take root, in order to help speed up this process, it is necessary to water. It is especially important to ensure that when digging the root collar does not end up underground. After a while, when the shoots take root, they can already be planted where you want, just like the cuttings.
Seeds
The most painstaking method of the above is growing girlish grapes from seeds. This is also recommended in spring or autumn. When sowing seeds in the spring, there are some nuances. First, the seeds must be subjected to a stratification process, in other words, hardened.
To do this, they need to be soaked for a couple of hours in cold water, then wrapped in cotton cloth and placed in the refrigerator for several days. When sown in autumn, it is enough to keep the seeds in water for three days, then they will germinate better. Sufficiently loose soil is needed for sowing, the seeds are placed at a depth of about 1 cm.
As mentioned above, all this requires scrupulousness, a sequence of actions, but it’s much easier to propagate girlish grapes in the first two ways.
Benefits of a grape hedge
In favor of girlish grapes as a tool that is used to make hedges, several factors testify. Already at the end of May, the plant fully blooms its lush leaves, which do not fade until late autumn, that is, for about six months, a spectacular hedge will delight the eye.
There are also no special problems associated with the care of girlish grapes, because it is “of little interest” to most pests, is immune to diseases, can grow both in the sun and in a darkened area, unpretentious to soil, moisture and temperature. It should be watered only in hot and dry summers, “feeding” is also not necessary, but you can apply a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer once a year.
As an aesthetic addition to the hedge, it can last for a long time – tens of years, because even in “old age” the plant still has plenty of green leaves to cover a significant area. And it covers this area quickly – its vines can grow up to three to four meters in length per year. Therefore, a hedge should be formed already in the first year, because if you start the situation, then everything around can be overgrown with this wild plant.
Even a small support is suitable for girlish grapes to start “taking over the world”, and here you need to immediately direct it in the direction that suits you and sometimes correct it later. experienced gardeners recommend regular pruning, which will make it much easier for you to control the plant. At the same time, it must be remembered that dried shoots are pruned only during the warm period of the year, because if done in winter, there can be unpleasant consequences, up to the death of girlish grapes. After pruning, the plant will spread new shoots with greater force, you also need to be prepared for this.
