The average person counts about 20 moles on the skin. Most melanocytic nevi do not exceed 5 mm in diameter, have a uniform color and clear borders, are completely flat or slightly convex.
However, we should take a closer look at those moles that are characterized by a papular component, clear nodules above the surface of the skin, asymmetric shape, discoloration and over 5 mm in diameter. A dermatologist should absolutely see moles that cause us pain, itching or bleeding.
Control birthmarks on your own!
You can control the signs yourself on a regular basis. As you observe them, keep these five points in mind:
- asymmetry – birthmarks that have an irregular shape,
- edge – an uneven edge is suspicious,
- color – the mole is distinguished by its color from the others, show it to the dermatologist, especially if it is very dark or has a non-uniform color,
- size – moles that get bigger over time or are unusually large
- evolution – changes in the appearance of the mole in the last quarter.
If you notice any of the symptoms, go to a doctor before tanning, who will inspect the skin with a dermatoscope. The examination is painless and allows you to decide on the possible treatment of moles.
Why is it worth looking at birthmarks?
Birthmarks and moles covering our skin usually do not harm our health. However, there is a risk that some of them may turn into skin cancer. It cannot be overestimated that by subjecting our skin to tests, we are able to recognize the threat at an early stage. Some birthmarks qualify for excision, because in the future they may turn out to be dangerous for us. The mole is excised along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure that it has been completely removed. Before the procedure, the patient receives local anesthesia. The sutures are placed using the same technique as in plastic surgery, thanks to which the risk of scar formation is negligible. The collected material is subjected to histopathological examination.
Dermatoscopy can also be carried out using a digital technique, combined with records of skin images that are compared during subsequent visits. In this way, safety is increased, especially in people with multiple birthmarks.
Birthmark self-examination
it should be in our blood, as well as examining our breasts for lumps, especially if we have ever suffered severe sunburn. Remember to always use cosmetics with UVA and UVB filters before sunbathing, which will reduce the likelihood of melanoma, which is a highly malignant skin cancer, collecting the largest toll of deaths.
