Get ready to give birth! Find out what to do before going to the hospital

The closer the birth, the more questions – what to take with you, can you paint your nails, how to dress? These seemingly trivial things are completely normal and understandable, especially for women who give birth for the first time. Every mother-to-be would like to feel as comfortable as possible (as far as possible in such a situation) and be prepared for anything.

  1. Depilation of intimate areas – in the past, shaving the pubic hair was a procedure performed during admission to the delivery ward, because the removal of hair allows for hygiene during childbirth (blood and other secretions do not stop in this place), it is also easier to assess the risk of perineal rupture. Today you have the right to refuse this procedure, but if you want, you can depilate yourself a few days before giving birth. It is best to use wax instead of a razor that irritates the skin.
  2. When to go to the hospital – is it already at the first contractions, or only in the active phase of labor? This issue becomes the object of many doubts. According to doctors, it is best to appear in the hospital only when contractions occur every 5-7 minutes. Each one should last about 60 seconds. Before this state, for 6-8 hours lasts the so-called. the “latent phase” during which contractions are just starting to appear. The waters are also draining. That’s why it’s best to stay home when you’re dealing with the initial contractions. You can take a shower, take a bath, sleep for a while or take a walk. Of course, only if you feel like it.
  3. Can you paint your nails and go to the hairdresser? – even in a place like the delivery room, most women would like to look good. This is completely normal, so if you feel the need, make an appointment with a hairdresser. Cutting your hair will make it easier to style, and there will be no time to take care of your hair in the delivery room. Coloring is also not forbidden, you can choose to color without any obstacles. However, painting the nails can be troublesome – the color of the nail informs doctors about the condition of the pregnant woman, e.g. during caesarean section. Even if you are going to give birth naturally, take into account that the decision to have a caesarean can be made suddenly. Instead of painting your nails, focus on foot care, keep them well-groomed and moisturized.
  4. What to wear – don’t bet on your prettiest pajamas. It is best to wear, for example, your husband’s shirt, one that you can part with. In addition, take comfortable socks and a bathrobe, as well as a shirt with a slit on the chest – so that it is easier to feed your baby. You’ll change into it after you shower and take you to your room.
  5. How to prepare — from the 32nd week of pregnancy, have a packed hospital bag, drink pregnancy teas, avoid tobacco smoke, stress and chemical food additives. Also think about how you want your birth to go – whether it is going to be a separate birthing room, what position you want to give birth in, whether you want an enema or an epidural.
