In some situations beyond our control, the body’s hydration level drops sharply, and our task is to restore it to normal as soon as possible. Gastrolit is one of the preparations treating dehydration in patients with diarrhea and other situations causing dehydration.

Gastrolit – indications for use, action

Gastrolit is a preparation manufactured by the Israeli pharmaceutical company Teva, whose products are very popular in Poland and Europe. It is a medicine in the form of a powder for making a solution to hydrate the body. The preparation is intended for oral administration. Gastrolit contains glucose and electrolytes that are excessively lost in diarrhea and other dehydration-inducing conditions. It is a combined preparation, and the active substances are played by sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, chamomile extract and glucose.

The package of the preparation contains 15 sachets of 4,15 g of powder for solution. The indication for the use of the drug is dehydration of the body caused by diarrhea. The drug can be used in both children and adults. The solution is administered orally after dissolving the sachet in a glass (200 ml) of warm, boiled water. The price of the Gastrolit preparation is about PLN 12.

The dosage depends on the degree of dehydration as well as the age or weight of the patient. For adults, it is usually from half to one liter per 4 hours, while in children older than 3 years it is 500 ml for four hours, then 100 ml after each liquid bowel movement. Babies and children up to 3 years of age can take 50 ml for every kilogram of body weight, and then 5 times less after each liquid stool.

Gastrolit – contraindications to use, side effects

A contraindication to the use of Gastrolit is hypersensitivity and allergy to any of the ingredients. The drug should not be used by people whose blood contains elevated levels of potassium and calcium. Gastrolit is not intended for patients suffering from anuria and kidney disorders. Before prescribing the drug, inform your doctor about the fact of increased blood pressure or hypertension, liver diseases, and diabetes. In the event of long-term diarrhea, i.e. diarrhea lasting more than one day, contact your doctor immediately. You should also report to your doctor that you are taking all medications.

Gastrolit is safe for pregnant and lactating women and does not affect the ability to drive. Side effects that may occur are increased levels of potassium in the blood, indigestion, vomiting. If diarrhea lasts longer than a day or symptoms of side effects worsen, contact your doctor.
