Garlic Rocambol: planting, growing

Garlic “Rocambol” differs from the usual variety in its larger size and softer taste. This wild vegetable is native to Asia. But it can be easily planted and grown in your own garden.

Planting garlic “Rocambol”

You can plant Rocambol garlic in spring or autumn. Regardless of the season, you need to prepare teeth of the same size and disinfect them. To do this, they should be immersed in a solution of potassium permanganate for 10 minutes. If planting is planned for the fall, then the material should be put in the refrigerator for a month. So the teeth will prepare for the winter cold.

Garlic “Rocambol” bears large fruits in the fourth year

It is better to prepare the soil immediately after harvesting the previous crop.

Spring planting occurs in early April and looks like this:

  1. Find a suitable sunny spot on the property. Do not plant garlic in a garden where garlic, onion or potatoes were previously grown. The best predecessors are cabbage, zucchini, legumes.
  2. Dig up the ground and loosen it 20 cm deep.
  3. The soil should be fertile, nutritious and loose. Therefore, add wood ash, compost and humus to it. Add other organic fertilizers.
  4. Peel the cloves and place them in the ground 10 cm.The distance between the cloves should be at least 25 cm, and between the beds – about 35 cm.
  5. Cover the soil with peat humus.

It is important to follow the procedure if you want to get a good harvest.

Autumn begins 3 weeks before the onset of frost, after about 20 October. In this case, you need to prepare the soil in the same way, and place the cloves about 25 cm deep. After planting, cover the soil with peat, straw and fallen leaves to protect the garlic from frost and retain heat, moisture and nutrients.

With proper preparation and planting, the first shoots of garlic will soon appear.

Growing garlic “Rocambol”

In order to get a large and healthy harvest, it is necessary to properly care for the garlic during its growth:

  • After the stems appear, you need to water the ground. When it dries a little, loosen it and weed it. This is necessary for oxygen circulation.
  • During the flowering period, in early July, remove the purple flowering arrows. They take away nutrients from the bulb.
  • Water the soil abundantly to keep it dry. Loosen the soil, but not often so as not to disturb its structure.
  • Remove weeds in a timely manner so that they do not interfere with the growth of the garlic.
  • With the first shoots, apply nitrogen fertilizers to the soil. Do the second feeding when 4 green leaves appear on the stem, for this add bird droppings or urea. For the third time, garlic is fed during the period of tying the bulbs – at the end of June, with fertilizers with potassium and phosphorus.

By following simple rules during cultivation, you can get and harvest in the second half of July.

Rocambol is an unpretentious plant, grow it in your own garden and be amazed at its large fruits.
