Garlic as a medicine for high blood pressure

Garlic can be a useful adjunct in the treatment of high blood pressure, according to a study reported in the Maturitas journal.

Australian doctors from the University of Adelaide conducted a study on 50 patients whose blood pressure was elevated despite the use of conventional medications.

As it turned out, people receiving 12 capsules of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) daily for 4 weeks had blood pressure about 10 mm Hg lower than those given a placebo.

It has long been believed that garlic has a beneficial effect on the heart – among other things, it lowers the level of bad cholesterol and reduces blood pressure in patients with untreated high blood pressure. However, an Australian study for the first time looked at people with persistent hypertension despite receiving conventional medications.

Experts reserve that more research is needed, and garlic extract should only be taken in consultation with a doctor, due to its blood-thinning effects and the possibility of undesirable interactions when combined with other drugs (PAP).
