Gargarin – the effect of the drug, indications, contraindications and possible side effects

Gargarin is a medicine in the form of a powder (in sachets) intended for the preparation of a gargling solution. Gargarin is used to treat inflammation of the throat and mouth.

The composition of the medicinal product Gargarin

Gargarin contains borax, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, sodium benzoate and levomenthol.

The action of the drug Gargarin

Gargarin has an antiseptic (disinfectant) and anesthetic effect at the site of application. The substances included in the preparation show a weak bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect. They also have a decongestant effect on the throat and mouth mucosa (they reduce swelling with inflammation).

The sodium carbonate contained in the Gargarin preparation increases the secretion of mucus in the respiratory tract and facilitates the dissolution of residual mucus.

Sodium chloride restores the electrolyte balance.

Menthol has a cooling, anesthetic and disinfecting effect.

Indications for the use of the drug Gargarin

Gargarin is used as an auxiliary in the treatment of inflammations of the mouth and throat – both bacterial, fungal and viral.

Contraindications to the use of the drug Gargarin

Gargarin should not be used if the patient is allergic to any of the substances contained in the preparation.

Gargarin is not recommended for injuries of the oral mucosa – it may then aggravate the symptoms and cause additional pain.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking Gargarin.

Dosage of the drug Gargarin

Gargarin is intended for external use – the powder is made into a gargle.

1 sachet of the product contains 5 g of powder, which should be dissolved in a glass of lukewarm, boiled water. Rinse the throat and mouth with the solution 2-3 times a day.

Side effects when using the drug Gargarin

In rare cases, Gargarin may cause irritation of the mucous membranes.

Allergic reactions may occur in patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Interactions of Gargarin with other drugs

There are no known interactions of Gargarin with other drugs; if in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Additional Notes and Warnings

Gargarin or its solution should not be swallowed.

In the case of long-term use of Gargarin or if it is used on damaged oral mucosa, symptoms of borax poisoning may appear – this substance accumulates in the body.

Gargarin contains sodium benzoate, which may cause irritation to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes – avoid direct contact with the powder, especially around the eyes and mucous membranes.

Gargarin should be stored at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius, in a tightly closed container, out of the reach of children. Do not use Gargarin after the expiry date – it will not have the expected effect then.
