GGTP, Gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, is an enzyme found in the cell membranes of the liver, pancreas, kidneys and intestines. The highest concentration of GGTP occurs in the proximal nephron tubules and in the intestinal brush border. Increased concentration of the GGTP enzyme may be a symptom of, for example, cholelithiasis.

  1. What is GGTP?

Enzym gamma-glutamylotranspeptydaza is i.a. component of the cellular antioxidant defense mechanism in the body. Increased concentration of the GGTP enzyme may be a symptom of gallbladder stones and liver diseases (it is the most sensitive marker). May also point to cholestasis, i.e. a set of factors leading to disturbances in the secretory functions of the liver. GGTP is found in the kidneys, liver, brain, pancreas, biliary epithelial cells, intestines, and in the prostate gland. However, the greatest activity of GGTP is observed in the intestines and kidneys. Testing this enzyme is one of the most sensitive liver tests. GGTP is not a specific marker for the differentiation of liver damage, therefore the level of aminotransferases and alkaline phosphatase should also be determined.

Do you want to not only test your GGTP concentration, but also analyze other parameters that tell you about your overall health? You can do it with the prophylactic examination package, which facilitates diagnostics, and it is worth doing it every year. In a special package for women, you will additionally find tests for the level of female hormones, and in the package for men, you can check, among others, testosterone levels.

When do we test for GGTP concentration?

Your doctor may refer you to a venous blood test to differentiate jaundice and if you suspect:

  1. liver diseases (hepatitis, drug-induced damage, toxic, ischemia of the liver parenchyma);
  2. alcoholic liver disease (high levels of GGTP occur in people who drink alcohol in large amounts; it is accompanied by high levels of other liver enzymes such as ALT and AST. In patients with liver damage, the GGTP / AST ratio is above 6);
  3. liver cancer;
  4. obstructed outflow of bile from the liver, inside the liver or in the bile ducts outside the liver (i.e. external or intrahepatic cholestasis; indications for GGTP testing are its symptoms, i.e. jaundice of the skin, mucous membranes and itching of the skin. and alkaline phosphatase activity).
  5. bile duct stones,
  6. tumor.

Liver problems are very troublesome and are often felt, for example, after eating. If they repeat, you should do the appropriate research. Polmed offers a package of laboratory tests for liver diseases. You can buy them today on Medonet Market.

GGTP – study

Serum is tested for GGTP. Before testing for GGTP levels, the patient should be fasting for at least 8 hours, because often high GGTP levels are a consequence of eating a fatty meal or drinking a large amount of high-percentage alcohol. It is contraindicated to consume alcohol on the day of the examination! A small amount of blood is drawn into the tube, most often from a vein in the arm. In children, the material is removed by making a small incision in the skin to cause a little bleeding.

At Medonet Market you can buy a package of preventive examinations – blood tests, in which one of the parameters tested is, among others, GGTP.

Standards

In a healthy person, the level of GGTP is most often the result of amino acids supplied to the body with a meal. Medicines taken by the patient may also influence the test result (especially preparations based on hormones). However, the level of GGTP depends largely on the development of the disease.

The GGTP value is assumed to be around 16-84 nmol / l / s.

  1. The correct norm for women:
  2. The correct norm for men:

Note: Each result should be consulted with a doctor.

It is assumed that the norm is when the results of blood tests in a man show GGTP not higher than 40 U / l, and in a woman 35 U / l.

Do you need interpretation of test results? Consult a doctor. You can use the haloDoctor.pl website, where you can make an online teleconsultation with an internist quickly and safely. Take advantage today.

GGTP Score Analysis

Increased GGTP (gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase) levels may suggest:

  1. damage to hepatocytes of a different etiology,
  2. acute or chronic pancreatitis (the first sign is usually severe upper abdominal pain),
  3. liver cancer (although it is usually a consequence of metastases from neoplasms of other organs, 5% of it may be a primary cancer),
  4. fatty liver (non-alcoholic),
  5. alcohol abuse,
  6. RA (rheumatoid arthritis),
  7. hepatitis (viral) or primary sclerosing,
  8. pancreatic cancer
  9. cholestasis (cholestasis, in children – atresia of the bile ducts – atresia),
  10. acute and chronic ailments of the biliary tract,
  11. myocardial infarction,
  12. liver damage as a result of taking antiepileptic drugs, furosemide, rifampicin,
  13. liver parenchyma diseases,
  14. obstructive jaundice (cholelithiasis, liver tumors).

In addition to the above-mentioned reasons, an increase in GGTP may also occur in heavy smokers and in inflammation of the lungs, intestines and pleura.

In people who abuse alcohol, an increase in GGTP can be observed for several months.

Note:

In order to establish the correct diagnosis, in addition to analyzing the test results, the patient’s general condition (symptoms) should be assessed and compared with the results of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGTP).
