In a creative family

December 19, 1933 in Moscow in the family of the famous film director Boris Izrailevich Volchek and his wife, screenwriter Vera Isaakovna Maimina, a girl was born, who was named Galina.

Galina’s father was a native of Vitebsk. For a long time he lived with his parents next door to the family of the artist Marc Chagall. In their youth, they were friends and Boris (Ber) often helped Mark stir thickened paints.

Galina’s parents were creative people and constantly disappeared in the theater, and the nanny was engaged in raising her daughter. The girl was not attracted to games, she preferred interesting books from a large home library to them.

While reading books, she often stopped at monologues or dialogues. Speaking dialogues, she changed intonation in accordance with the character of the hero. The nanny always braided her hair in two neat pigtails. At the end of each school year, she was presented with a certificate of commendation. Mom was very proud of her daughter.

When her parents divorced, Galina studied in elementary school. At that time, she had to make a choice between her parents: she stayed with her father. Boris Izrailevich, seeing such a craving for books, advised his daughter to prepare for admission to the Literary Institute. But her daughter dreamed of a career as a theater actress.

Galina’s character was difficult and inflexible. However, this remained for the rest of his life. As a teenager, she started smoking. I wanted to look older: I dyed blonde and often used makeup.

Theater “Sovremennik”

Since childhood, Galina was surrounded by an atmosphere of creativity, which predetermined her choice of profession. In 1955 Volchek graduated from the Moscow Art Theater School. Then the graduates of this school became the founders of the Sovremennik theater, headed by Oleg Efremov.

Volchek loved to play age roles, while still very young. According to the actress, it is in such roles that you can create an interesting, memorable character.

At the theater, Volchek offered performances of a new format, which became a symbol of the “thaw”. When Oleg Nikolaevich Efremov moved to the Moscow Art Theater, Volchek replaced him as chief director.

She refused to work as a director for a long time, despite Efremov’s persistent persuasion. She considered herself an actress and did not plan to change anything. But fate decreed in its own way, and Volchek’s talent was revealed precisely in the role of a theater director.

She became the first director of the USSR to break the cultural blockade between the two countries. Since 1978, Volchek has staged five performances in the United States, which were enthusiastically received by the audience. The performances were sold out and ended with thunderous applause.

In 1996-1997. the theater went on tour in New York on Broadway. These performances received the Drama Desk Prize, for the first time it was awarded to a foreign theater.

The talented director was often invited to performances by numerous theaters in Europe and the United States. She has lectured on the basics of theater direction abroad.

Personal life of Galina Volchek

Galina Borisovna has never been deprived of the attention of men. Her first husband was actor Yevgeny Evstigneev. They met while still students. In 1961, his son Denis was born.

Family life was difficult and unsettled. Seven years later, the marriage fell apart. The son devoted himself to the art of cinema. He is a filmmaker, cameraman and producer.

The second husband was Mark Abelev, professor at MISS. He was painfully jealous of his wife, controlled her. Given the nature of Volchek, this was unacceptable for her. After living together for almost ten years, they parted.

Then for ten years Volchek was in a civil marriage, which she does not like to remember. According to Galina Borisovna, she was not created for a family. Her life is a theater, which she never regretted.

Galina Volchek, Academician of the Russian Academy of Cinematic Arts, has been awarded many orders and state prizes.

Illness and death

Volchek survived everyone with whom she began to build Sovremennik, but age does not spare anyone. Volchek has problems with the spine. A terrible diagnosis was made: an intervertebral hernia.

With the pressure of body weight on the intervertebral discs, especially during movement, unbearable pain appears. Volchek refused the operation of the best surgeons. There was no 100% guarantee of a cure and there were heart problems.

On December 23, 2019, Galina Borisovna was admitted to the Botkin hospital with bronchitis. Later he was diagnosed with pneumonia. She died at the age of 87 on December 26, 2019 from cerebral and pulmonary edema.
