Biography of Gabriel García Márquez
Gabriel García Márquez was born in 1928. Latin American author, laureate of the Neustadt Prize in Literature in 1982, politician, publicist. The author’s novel about a hundred years of loneliness, created in magical realism, has become popular.
The son of Eligio and Luisa Marquez grew up in Colombia, in the city of Aracataca. Under the care of his grandparents (Louise’s parents), Gabriel Garcia enthusiastically got acquainted with the traditions of their ancestors, as well as with the local dialect.
After the death of his grandfather, the boy settled in his parents’ house in Sucre. His father had a pretty good pharmacy business there.
A year before the outbreak of World War II, Fellow Gabriel enrolled in Zipaquira College, located in the northern outskirts of Bogota. Six years later, he was already a law student.
In his last year, the young man already sees himself as a journalist and devotes his life to writing. He read many works of publicist writers: E. Hemingway, W. Wolfe and F. Kafka.
Writer’s creativity
In the fifties of the last century, Marquez wrote articles for various publications. He becomes a member of the Barranquilla Group, where many Colombian authors were gathered. In 1954, the writer blogs in the newspaper, writes reviews of feature films and television series.
At thirty, he travels for educational purposes, as well as a journalist, some European countries, the USA and the USSR.
The most famous in those years was his essay “USSR: 22 sq. M. m. without advertising Coca-Cola ”. The author reflected his impressions of the visit to Moscow and the Sixth World Youth Festival. Five years later, he becomes the father of the future filmmaker R. Garcia.

In 1961, the writer finishes work on a story about a colonel to whom no one is writing. A popular novel was One Hundred Years of Solitude, which he published in 1967.
The Nobel Prize
Prior to that, other works of the author came out, mainly stories and scripts for films. For stories and stories about the morals of the inhabitants of the whole Latin American continent, the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. This was the first time a Colombian received such a prize.
In 1993 and later, when B. Clinton was at the head of the United States, the Mexican President unofficially asked Marquez to participate in dialogues between the President of the United States and the head of Cuba.
In 2000, one of the newspapers of the Republic of Peru published an article allegedly on behalf of Marquez about his illness. But this turned out to be the invention of the ventriloquist D. Welch.
Two years later, the writer decides to tell about himself in the work “To Live to Tell About Life,” consisting of three books. This is the first work in the genre of magic realism.
In the summer of 2004, the author was offered to film his Love in the Time of Cholera. The film was filmed in 2006 on the picturesque beaches of the Caribbean Sea.
Shortly before the release of his work “Memories of my sad whores”, the original was stolen and illegally released for distribution. But the author changed the last chapters of the work. And those pirated copies were taken away with the help of the police.
However, some still remained in the hands of fans of his original and distinctive talent. And now it’s a tidbit for book story lovers.
By 2010, Marquez had accumulated unpublished works. They came out in the collection I’m Not Here to Speak. 2012 in Russia became the year of Gabriel Marquez, he was awarded the Order of Honor.
Illness and death
In recent years, starting in 1989, Gabriel has spent a grueling battle against respiratory cancer. The disease was caused by continuous cigarette smoking. He underwent surgery, he was treated in one of the best clinics in Mexico.
His brother these days reported that Gabriel was in a good mood. However, in the spring of 2014, at the age of 88, Marquez died within the walls of his own home in the Mexican capital.
