Functional disorders of the esophagus include conditions of abnormal contraction of the muscle membrane of the pharynx and too much contractility in its upper part or around the cardia. The spasm of the upper part of the esophagus usually occurs in patients with a hysterical-affective personality and is characterized by a persistent feeling of pressure located outside the trachea.

How are the functional disorders of the esophagus manifested?

The contraction of the key is manifested by:

  1. pain in the fovea or behind the xiphoid process of the sternum, which intensifies immediately after eating even a small portion of food,
  2. difficulties in swallowing food freely,
  3. vomiting that brings relief to the patient (he usually returns any recently eaten unchanged food remaining in the esophagus),
  4. difficult passage of swallowed food from the esophagus to the stomach due to excessive contraction of the sphincter at the border of the esophagus and stomach,
  5. expansion of the esophagus, atony or catarrhal changes on the esophageal mucosa above the cardia (due to food lingering and pressing from above).

Functional disorders of the esophagus – treatment

In the functional disappearance of peristaltic contractions of the esophagus (atony), patients take preparations that trigger or stimulate the contractility of the muscle layer. On the other hand, in systolic conditions, relaxing agents, sedatives, and most often mechanical expansion of the esophagus are indicated.

What’s the prognosis?

The prognosis of a disease such as a functional disorder of the esophagus depends on the response to treatment. On the other hand, the prevention of this disease consists primarily in the withdrawal of nicotine and the prevention of states that trigger neurotic tension of the parasympathetic nervous system.
