If you’re having trouble finding the function you need, use Function wizard, which allows you to find functions using keywords. Although this assistant is very useful, it can still be difficult to use it. If you do not yet have a certain experience with functions in Excel, then it will be much easier to find the desired function through the library. Function wizard is a series of dialog boxes in which Excel guides the user from selecting the desired function to setting all the arguments. In Excel 2013, unlike earlier versions of Excel, this dialog box is not called Function wizard, Inserting a function.
How to use the Function Wizard in Excel
In the following example, we need to find a function that counts the total number of items ordered. To find out the number, we need to count the cells in the column Productthat use text. In this case, we cannot use the function SCORE, because it only counts cells with numeric values. Therefore, we need to find a function that counts the number of filled cells in the range.
- Select the cell that will contain the formula. In our example, we will select cell B16.
- Click the formula on the Ribbon, and then select the command Insert function.
- Will open Function wizard. In the dialog box that appears Inserting a function enter a few keywords describing the type of calculation that the required function performs, and then press To find. In our example, we will enter the phrase “number of cells“, but you can also search for a function by category from the drop-down list.
- Look through the list of results to find the function you need, then click OK. In our example, we will choose COUNT, because it counts the number of nonblank cells in the range.
- A dialog box will appear Function arguments. Select field Meaning1, and then type or select the desired cells. In our example, we will enter the range A3:A10. If necessary, you can continue to fill in the arguments in the fields Meaning2, Meaning3 etc. In the same example, we want to count the number of positions only in the range A3:A10.
- If all information is entered correctly, click OK.
- Function wizard will close and you will see the result. In our example, the result shows that a total of eight items were ordered.
