Fuchsia cuttings: how to root
It takes at least six months to grow fuchsia from seeds, and the first flowers on a plant appear in the second year of life. For this reason, flower growers prefer fuchsia propagation by cuttings, which take root in a couple of weeks, and flowering can be observed already in the same year.
Rooting cuttings in water
The ideal time for breeding is spring, when all living things wake up from hibernation. At this time, cuttings of fuchsia root well and develop quickly.
It is better to take the soil for rooting cuttings of fuchsia as loose and breathable as possible
For breeding, you should take young, not yet lignified shoots, on which there are 2-3 pairs of leaves. If they are too large, they should be cut in half to reduce the evaporation surface. The cuttings are carefully cut with a knife and placed in a small transparent bowl filled with boiled water. To prevent the possibility of decay, an activated carbon tablet is added.
If signs of decay appear, it is necessary to update the cut and change the water in the container
In case of wilting of the leaves, you should build a kind of greenhouse by covering the container with a film or a plastic cup. This will create a humid microclimate inside, which has a positive effect on the rooting process.
The container with cuttings is placed in a warm, well-lit place, but so that the sun does not fall on the plant. After the roots appear, you should wait until they grow 2-3 cm, and transplant the fuchsia into pots with soil.
How to root fuchsia cuttings in the ground
The soil mixture is poured into a plastic cup, a small hole is made and the stalk is set so that the lower leaves do not come into contact with the ground. The soil around the shoot is slightly compacted and watered.
Instead of earth, you can use a coco-fiber tablet, in which 99% of cuttings successfully take root.
Cups with planting material are covered with foil or placed in a common greenhouse. To prevent decay of the shoots, you should regularly ventilate the containers.
After 10-15 days, when the roots appear, they begin to accustom fuchsia to life without a greenhouse. The airing time is increased every day and eventually the film is removed altogether. After the roots have grown enough and braided around the earthy coma, they are transplanted into a larger container with a fresh substrate. You should not immediately take a large pot – as it grows, the container is increased gradually, otherwise the roots will begin to rot.
Fuchsia is a tropical plant and needs high humidity for normal development. In artificial conditions, it is necessary to regularly spray and place a container of water near the flower.
