Where from such comparison?
The main reason for this accusation is the high sugar content in fruit juices. For this reason, Professor Naveed Sattar and Dr. Jason Gill believe that including juice in the program eat 5 servings of vegetables and fruits maybe have a counterproductive effect, because the juice will start to be associated with the product, which does not need to be limited, and in this case it is not.
Changing labels?
Scientists also began to insist that there should be duty informing consumers on packages that they should not drink more than 150 ml of juice daily. Otherwise, the juices can be consumed as a substitute for water, or other drinks and thus provide enormous amounts of calories and sugar. AND these are calories that most people do not count towards the daily requirement, because they just treat them as liquid, not as a meal or snack.
Below you can see the comparison between cola and juice. However, let’s not forget that juices are definitely there healthier than cola, because they contain something that cannot be found in cola, i.e. vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Drinking 1 liter of orange juice without sugar will provide us with additional 430 kcal, and drinking 1 liter of cola… 420 kcal. In addition, by drinking so much juice, we will provide ourselves as much as 97 g of simple sugars!
Juice and fruit
At this point, however, one might wonder if so drinking juices should be so limited, fruit consumption should also be to be curtailed? Professor Sattar says no, because one fruit contains much less sugar than a glass of fruit juice and more other nutritional values, such as the fiber in the juice practically absent or present in trace amounts. He also claims that The situation is not saved by the fact that fruit juices contain a lot of vitamins and ingredients minerals, because their level is not high enough to compensate for the unhealthy the effect that excess sugar in juices has on our metabolism.
Excess sugar
So let’s recall what the excess sugar in diet. Consuming this nutrient in large amounts can lead to obesity, diabetes and other diet-related diseases. In addition, sugar weakens our immune system and contributes to the development of caries.
However, studies show that sugar is available raw fruits work differently from juices because eating large amounts raw fruit may contribute to reducing the risk of developing diabetes, whereas drinking fruit juice is closely associated with an increased risk.
What to do?
So let’s remember that everything is healthy as long as we care about it moderation. So let’s drink fruit juices, but let’s limit ourselves to 1 glass a day and let’s choose the freshly squeezed and day-old ones, instead of the cardboard ones, because they contain much more nutrients. Let’s also be careful about drinks which only pretend to be juices, as our dietitian Karolina Łąkowska wrote about in the article Do not drink these juices. Let us also remember about proper storage of juices. Regardless of what juice we choose, after Once opened, it should be stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.
