Front of work: what needs to be done in the country in August
Something needs to be collected, something, on the contrary, sowed. And how much trouble in harvesting and processing the crop!
In the very first days of August, agronomists advise to start the resumption of crops of parsley, dill, lettuce, coriander – cilantro. In warm weather, they will rise faster than in spring, they will not coarse for a long time, and even the first frosts will withstand in the fall.
August sowing of radish is also better than spring crops – with a shortening daylight hours, the root crop ceases to go into the arrow and does not grow stiff. Pay attention to the varieties “Octava”, “Mercado”, “Mayak”, “Mokhovsky”.
Caring – heat-loving
They remove and put into the house not only brown, but also large green fruits of tomatoes, accelerate the ripening of the remaining ones, pinching the tops on the bushes, and also removing the lower leaves and flowers. Tomato beds are covered with non-woven material. And as early as possible, before signs of disease appear, the plants are prophylactically sprayed with the preparations Bordeaux mixture, Ordan, Alirin-B, Fitosporin.
They do the same with cucumbers, but the tops and leaves are not removed, and the harvest is harvested more often than usual, that is, every 3-5 days, preventing the overgrowth of the greenery. Compost is poured to the base of the lashes, which causes the formation of an additional upper layer of roots. And a powerful impetus to the development of plants is obtained with foliar feeding (spraying the leaves) with a weak solution of complex fertilizers with microelements (Sudarushka-cucumber, Mikromix). The new anti-stress growth regulator “Kresacin BP” significantly rejuvenates old cucumber lashes.
Long and good fruiting of zucchini is facilitated by feeding and frequent, weekly, harvesting of fruits, especially since the seeds that have not overgrown and did not have time to form are the most tender, tasty and healthy.
On a climbing pumpkin, remove the top of the main and side shoots, as well as the ovary – then the remaining fruits will ripen faster. In addition, lay the fruits on the ground with their tops on their side, preferably on planks, in order to avoid decay.
Onions and garlic are not afraid of cold weather, but they also do not tolerate delays in harvesting – otherwise they are poorly stored. Dig them out as soon as the lower leaves begin to fly off and turn yellow.
As for watering, with more or less moist soil, it is either stopped, or the beds are watered only with warm water warmed up by the sun and only at the root.
Fruit and berry
From the old varieties in the first half of August ripen “Yulskoe Chernenko”, “Quinti”, “Papirovka”, “Early Aloe”, and in the second – “Grushovka Moskovskaya”, “Mantet”, “Melba”, “Candy”.
Pay attention to the new variety – “Yablochny Spas” (ripens before “Papirovka”), as well as such late summer varieties as “Augusta”, “Darena”, “Maslovskoye”, “Yubilyar”, which ripen after August 15–20.
Now flower buds are being laid on the branches of fruit trees and shrubs – the basis of the next year’s harvest. Therefore, in the first or second decade, it is necessary to weed out weeds and dig up the near-stem circles, feed the plants with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (ash), pinch the tips of the still growing shoots, and water in drought.
The first half of the month is the optimal time for planting garden strawberries. All bushes – both new and old – have their whiskers removed regularly. But it is necessary to mow the leaves carefully – after all, this reduces the yield and winter hardiness. Removal and burning of all leaves is necessary only if they are damaged by pests and diseases, that is, if the leaves are twisted, deformed, covered with spots.
Flowers: we divide and propagate
The first and second decades of August are the time for digging up, dividing and replanting old, 4–5-year-old lily bulbs to a new place.
Remove from them and destroy scales with brown and rusty spots, and soak clean bulbs for prophylaxis against diseases for 2 hours in a solution of “Vitaros”. It is suitable for disinfection and other perennial flowers.
Large lily bulbs are planted to a depth of 10–12 cm, medium – 8–10 cm, small ones – 7–8 cm.
At the end of the second decade, start dividing peonies, and in the middle – end of the month – phlox, daisies, daylily, delphiniums, astilba, perennial asters. For this, large bushes are split into several parts, making sure that at least 3-5 buds and developed roots remain in each. Then wintering without losses and good development in the future are guaranteed.
