You wake up in the morning – you can’t breathe through a completely stuffy nose. You get the feeling that your headache and sinus pain are reaching their maximum. So is your irritation. You automatically cover yourself up to your ears with the duvet… you already know it won’t be a good day. You know it, right? If so, there are more of us, us inhalers. Read about a week in my life before I decided to change it.
Monday, March 21 – Monday worse than the famous Blue Monday
The first day of astronomical spring. As usual, I woke up at eight, I have to make the colloquium at the university – inhale, exhale, after all, this is just another test that I studied for the last week. Shower, coffee with milk, avocado toast and a quick overview of the news. When I go out, I put my glasses on – I think the sun has never shone so bright at this time of the year.
Spring is one of my favorite seasons – nature comes to life, the days get longer, and I can finally wear my favorite sneakers and a light coat instead of a thick, heavy down jacket. There is only one “but” – an allergy that effectively makes my life difficult and, as if in anger, made itself felt when I started writing the test. Runny nose, sneezing and stuffy nose, a classic trio that distracted me so effectively that I think I’m doomed to a correction …
Tuesday, March 22 – I think I won’t be out until July
Fortunately, today I have a day off at the university, but unfortunately not from allergies. In the evening I forgot to close the bedroom window – just so you would know how tiring that night was for me. A stuffy nose and a dry mouth made me wake up at least four times a night. Today only a big cup of coffee will save me. In the afternoon I have an appointment at the orthodontist. The dark circles under my eyes don’t look my best after a sleepless night, and the constant runny nose makes me wipe my nose all the time. I have to leave now, grab my purse, put five packets of handkerchiefs, keys, phone and wallet in it.
Wednesday, March 23 – well-being – strong 2/10
Tonight was much calmer. So after breakfast I decided to go jogging to the park near my apartment – it was probably the worst decision today. It took ten minutes for my eyes to water. Amazing… I remembered that it was in March that the poplar to which I am allergic begins to dust, and I do not have any medications at home, I finished the last packaging last year. I already know that the bicycle also has threads. I forgot that surviving spring is mission impossible for me. As if all were not enough, my head started to hurt. Here a short nap helped.
Thursday, March 24 – I can’t take it anymore
I spent yesterday evening reading books, studying for the next exam, this time in legal logic – it took me twice as long as I had assumed, because my nose was blocked and I was sneezing, I couldn’t concentrate. That’s it, I sign up for a doctor, I can’t cut myself off from the world. An appointment is scheduled for tomorrow. Today I plan to clean up, it de-stresses me a lot. I changed the sheets, did the laundry and vacuumed the room. In the evening, my friend from the direction, Karolina, is supposed to visit me. We will ask logic, drink tea, talk. Maybe it will help me forget when I feel bad for a moment.
Friday, March 25 – about a visit that changed a lot
Fortunately, there was no line at the clinic and I went straight into the office. After talking to me, the doctor saw no other effective solution than the regular intake of antiallergic drugs. He prescribed over-the-counter medications that I can buy myself when the first pack runs out. Thanks to this, I do not have to come to the next visit. Okay, it’s time to start treatment!
Saturday, March 26 – I am starting to see my eyes
In this terrible week, I had forgotten what it was like to wake up without a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. I thought that I would spend today reading books, but Karolina called in the morning and suggested a walk in the park. I was delighted with this idea, but I had concerns about whether the drugs would be able to cope with the dusty plants. Needless to say, it was much better than Wednesday’s jogging test.
I feel that with each day that I support myself with the drug, my condition will gradually improve.
Sunday, March 27 – when are we going to this picnic?
Yesterday’s well-being motivated me to spend more time outdoors. I took another dose of the drug (fortunately one tablet a day is enough) and started this beautiful day. I came up with the idea to organize a Sunday picnic. The weather was wonderful, and most importantly – the poplars were not so terrible for me. I called my sister and we made an appointment close to home so that I could quickly come back to him. It wasn’t necessary, I felt very good all day. I didn’t have any severe allergy symptoms that made me have to go home. I wish I had started the treatment earlier. But it is nothing, it is important that from now on I can fill my every day with what I like to do – meet my friends outside, enjoy cycling in the woods. The allergy took a lot of my energy and willingness to live. Now its quality has improved significantly. And let it stay that way!
You probably too, as I used to wonder what you have to give up today – morning training, spring picnic, a few important business meetings? How many people will ask you why you are so distracted, why, if you are coughing and have a runny nose, you are not at home on sick leave. On sick leave … but how, a few months each year? Seemingly free, and as if under house arrest. Breaking news – you don’t have to go through it this way, don’t let allergy change your life!
How to effectively fight allergies?
Periodic allergic rhinitis does not have to be associated with giving up daily activities – the key is to start an antiallergic treatment in a timely manner. Allergy is no longer seasonal, because the periods of dust change every year. Knowing what allergens we are allergic to, it is worth knowing the current calendar in order to react in a timely manner and prevent the development of persistent symptoms. The best way to fight allergy symptoms is to take antihistamines before the first symptoms appear – not only will they work more effectively, but also prevent the consequences and complications of chronic rhinitis, such as nasal blockage, allergic sinusitis or otitis. [1]
Modern antiallergic preparations available on the market allow you to live with an allergy. They reduce the symptoms of hay fever such as sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, redness and watery eyes without causing sleepiness or low concentration. [2] Importantly, these drugs are available without a prescription, thanks to which, knowing your symptoms and knowing what helps us, there is no need to frequently check with a specialist.
