Pets not only give their young owners the joy of friendship, develop a sense of responsibility, but also protect children … from gastroenteritis. A study by researchers at the University of Western Australia led by Dr. Jane Heyworth, showed that the symptoms of gastroenteritis (often called «intestinal flu» in everyday life) — nausea, diarrhea, vomiting — are 30% less likely to occur in children with pets. “Dogs and cats are thought to be carriers of harmful bacteria, but our research does not support this,” says Jane Hayworth. On the contrary, through constant contact with animals, children develop immunity against moderate exposure to pathogens.
