😉 Greetings to my dear readers! In the article “Frida Kahlo: Biography, Creativity” – about the life of the Mexican artist, best known for her self-portraits.
Frida Kahlo de Rivera, or Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderon. In Mexico, Europe and the United States, she was called simply by her name. This flamboyant woman was a unique artist. Her life of endless troubles and victories has made her a national legend in South America.
Biography of Frida Kahlo
At the age of six, Frida contracted polio, which crippled her right leg. At eighteen, she had an accident on the bus. The girl was crippled so much that the doctors folded her from pieces, like a photomontage. From then until her death at the age of 47 (1954), Frida did not part with pain.
She underwent two difficult operations, changed 28 corsets, and while the plaster was drying, she was hung up, tied to her legs with sandbags. But even in this state, she conquered men, painted pictures, told jokes, received guests. What helped her?
An almost supernatural thirst for love. Fused eyebrows, antennae and lameness did not prevent her from charming men. The artist married the world’s most popular monumentalist Diego Rivera, becoming his third wife. It was hard to find a bigger womanizer, but he only loved Frida!
Frida and Rivera set up a fundraising committee for the Spanish Republicans. Those, fleeing the Franco regime, came to Mexico and became fans of the extravagant couple. This couple also sheltered Leon Trotsky. For the last two years of his life, he hid in their house.
Ancient Mexican heritage
The artist created collections of Mexican folk objects, jewelry, masks. It was her unshakable island in an ephemeral world. Together with Rivera, they built a temple for the collection of pre-Columbian idols – the Aztec and Mayan gods. Frida sold her apartment. She invested in a building that strengthened her marriage and became a national museum.
Clothing is a way to shape a legendary personality. Frida constantly wore the dresses of women of the ancient Mexican tribe, famous for their majesty and strength. Their costumes were very beautiful and successfully concealed Frida’s physical flaws. Wherever the artist appeared, she created a sensation.
In such a dress, she is captured on the cover of “Vogue” magazine. That was how Diego adored her. Sometimes Diego went to symphony concerts, which Frida did not like. She sent her friend with him, putting on her own distinctive dress. So he was “under supervision.”
Friendship with duals, kind of doubles
Kahlo was able to find those who were in many ways like her, but instead of her inherent weaknesses, she had strong properties. She relied on these people. Rivera was like that too. She is in his shadow, in his rear.
Once at a party, Rivera’s ex-wife lifted Frida’s skirt so that everyone could see her mutilated leg. It was with this woman that Frida immediately became friends. Her ex-wife taught her how to cook the dishes that Diego loved. Frida tamed many of his girlfriends, and they became useful to her.
She wrote herself. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, and felt that she had two personalities – an artist and a model. The one in the mirror was not in pain. The one who wrote, splashed it out of herself onto the canvas … and received relief.
The works of Frida Kahlo enjoyed great success. During the depression years in New York, half of the canvases from her exhibition were sold out. Among the admirers of Frida’s talent were Nelson Rockefeller, Paul Eluard, Picasso. Henry Ford gave her an exclusive car. Kandinsky wept over her paintings.
Sometimes wine was spilled at the family table or sugar was scattered. Immediately, with the help of pepper, coffee, multi-colored spices, a wonderful picture was created at the place of the disorder.
If Frida was bringing lunch to Rivera (working, he was not interrupted), then she put the food in a beautiful basket. She decorated it with flowers and covered it with a napkin with an embroidered love lettering in the custom of Mexican peasant women.
Every day she made a still life for her husband on the table from dishes, fruits and six or seven bouquets. And supper consisted of hot chocolate, arousing love, and rolls. Rivera was always shrouded in a veil of special care.
Last exhibition
She multiplied the holiday in her soul, spreading it around. Frida organized unforgettable folk festivities with fireworks and balloons. There were bullfights, dances and songs accompanied by a folk orchestra.
The holidays were whimsical and fun. Films were shot about them, which were then played in cinemas. At her last exhibition, Frida arrived in an ambulance. She was laid on the bed in the gallery. Two hundred visitors (no longer fit) sang folk Mexican ballads to her until late at night.
Frida Kahlo left the world on July 13, 1954 from pneumonia. Lived: 1907-1954. Zodiac sign – Cancer.
