The book by the French art critic Francoise Barbe-Galle is a great help for anyone who wants to teach children to understand and love painting. It is useful, for example, to read the book before taking a child to a museum for the first time — Barbe-Gall reveals some secrets on how to make this trip enjoyable (and, most importantly, not the last), and also clearly and informatively answers many questions about fine art art that can come to a child’s head (why is an artist called great? why are portraits needed? why is such a daub hanging in a museum? ..). The book contains reproductions of 30 paintings by famous artists (from the Middle Ages to the present day). Each picture has explanations in the form of questions and answers — about the plot, color, composition, selected for each age group (five-seven years old, eight-ten, 11-17). Such «keys» will help adults find the exact words to talk to the child. And children will get the first idea about the history of art, learn to «read» paintings of different genres and artistic movements and not be shy to express their impressions.
