They arise when falling from a height and when hit by a heavy object. In the tarsal area, the most common fracture is the calcaneus, which may present as an intra-articular fracture and an extra-articular fracture, such as a calcaneus fracture.

Treatment calcaneus fractures consists in restoring the foot arch and lifting its valgus. Displaced fractures are treated with surgery or with the use of an external fixator.

Fracture of the talus occurs when falling from height onto the dorsally flexed foot. These fractures require surgical treatment due to frequent complications due to necrosis of the shaft of the talus.
