The fracture can occur in the proximal part (in the head and shoulder area), in the middle part and in the area of the elbow joint.
Fractures of the proximal end of the humerus
They are common in older people. They are in the third place after the fracture of the radius and neck of the femur. Fractures occur when you fall on an outstretched arm. Then there is pain and swelling of the shoulder, difficulties in making movements.
First aid. The treatment of choice at the site of the fracture is immobilization of the limb, preferably by bandaging to the chest or immobilization on a Kramer splint.
Treatment. Most often conservative and outpatient.
Fractures of the central part (shank)
They happen in adults after direct trauma. These are multi-fragmentation fractures or fractures after indirect injury, with a fall on a rotated limb.
The diagnosis is easy as there is pain, swelling and deformity in the arm. Occasionally, these fractures may be accompanied by damage to the radial nerve, characterized by a lack of active extension of the wrist and metacarpophalangeal joints, and a disturbance of sensation on the dorsal side of the fingers.
First aid. When giving first aid, attention should be paid to wrist and finger movements and good fixation of the fragments with a Kramer splint or bandaging the limb to the chest with the elbow bent.
Treatment. This fracture usually requires surgical treatment.
To support the body in the treatment of bone fractures and to prevent their formation, it is worth supplementing with vitamin K. We recommend, for example, Monolipid K – a preparation from Xenico Pharma, which contains 30 capsules and is sufficient for a month of supplementation.
Fractures near the elbow
They are most common in children. They account for 60% of all injuries in this area in children. Both a fracture and a large hematoma can lead to disturbances in blood circulation. With long-lasting circulatory disturbance, ischemic contracture may occur, leading to severe disability.
First aid. During the procedure, attention should be paid to severe pain, swelling and blue in the fingers, and a disturbance in the axis of the elbow joint. After the fragments are properly immobilized on the splint, the limb is bandaged to the trunk, it is necessary to contact a specialist doctor immediately. In adults, the most common fractures are intra-articular, requiring surgical treatment with anatomical reconstruction of the articular surface.
To relieve fracture symptoms, reduce pain and swelling, and speed healing, use Comfrey Root infusion.
