Four types of masks in which you can feel safe

For some time now, masks have been a permanent element of our wardrobe. It will probably stay that way for a long time. It is also possible that, due to the coronavirus and smog, the masks will be with us forever in public spaces. We present four types of masks that realistically increase protection against infection and polluted air.

Disposable protective

A disposable mask is the cheapest solution, not the worst. Its only serious drawback is that it can only be used once. It consists of three filter layers. The outer one stops harmful particles and micro-drops and prevents touching the mouth and nose with the hands. The middle layer filters and inhibits aerosols, while the inner layer is pleasant to the touch and provides high wearing comfort. The mask’s filtration efficiency is as high as 98 percent and is a barrier to airborne microdroplets. The masks are made in universal sizes for adults and children.

Reusable N95 FFP2

The more expensive, but noteworthy, mask is the reusable version. Its filtration efficiency is over 99 percent and it is an effective barrier to microdroplets in which, for example, coronaviruses are transmitted. The mask meets the FFP2 standard. It is worth explaining here what these designations are (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3). They differ in the maximum leakage limit due to the incomplete adhesion of the mask to the skin and the passage of air through the valve. FFP1 has a 25 percent leakage limit, FFP2 11 percent, and FFP3 5 percent. This reusable mask consists of as many as five filter layers: spundbond non-woven fabric, activated carbon non-woven fabric, meltblown non-woven fabric, cotton layer, and spunbond non-woven fabric. Another advantage is an internal metal nose wire that allows a tight fit to the face. The manufacturer states that the mask is sufficient for 2-3 days of active use.

For children, we recommend a cotton reusable protective mask for children with a filter, available at Medonet Market.

Reusable anti-smog N99 FFP3

The most expensive masks are the reusable, anti-smog with valves. The model presented above is over 99 percent. filtration efficiency and meets the highest FFP3 standard. Filters protect us against viruses, bacteria, smog, PM 1.0, PM 2.5 and PM 10. They are also interchangeable, so the mask can serve us for a long time. Flexible neoprene and a metal nose clip ensure a perfect fit to the face and full tightness even during physical activity. During the current pandemic, the manufacturer recommends disinfecting the exterior of the mask with an alcohol-based liquid or spray and allowing it to dry. It can also be washed by hand using soap and water at 30 ° C (without filter and valves). According to the manufacturer’s calculations, using such a mask for the entire month with ten replaceable filters costs about PLN 170. For comparison, the use of disposable masks (60 pieces) will cost us about PLN 240.

Dust half mask

Dust masks are well known to builders and industrial workers. It turns out that they can also protect not only against harmful dust, but also against viruses and smog. The mask presented above meets the FFP2 standard. The exhaust valve is located at the level of the mouth. The edges of the mask are finished with foam, which makes it tight and comfortable. The manufacturer ensures that it protects during the processing of wood, metals and grinding, and also meets the requirements of the dolomite dust test. It is also a safe solution, which was used by many people, especially at the beginning of the epidemic. Now that there is no problem with the availability of masks dedicated to protecting health against viruses and smog, let’s better treat dust masks as an emergency solution. Unless the manufacturer additionally provides information on the effectiveness of filtration during everyday use.
