The 45-year-old from New Zealand has complained of constant nasal pain and breathing problems for most of her life. However, she did nothing about it. Only recently – thanks to the COVID-19 test – doctors discovered that her nostrils had a memento from her childhood. History circulated the media as a warning.
Mary McCarthy suffered from chronic disease for 37 years acheour. Only recently did she finally discover the cause of her discomfort. It turned out that the woman had a childhood toy in her nose. It was exactly a tiny yellow disc that is traditionally used for the popular game of Pchełki.

It happens that children put toy parts in their nose and you have to go with them to the emergency room. Mary McCarthy probably blocked her nose when she was eight, but no one in the house realized that something was wrong.
Interestingly, the 45-year-old, whose story spread around the world media, works at a hospital in Addington, New Zealand. In October last year, she had to undergo a COVID-19 test. Swabbing both nostrils made the pain in the nose even more severe. What’s more, he experienced serious breathing problems and a constant runny nose. Doctors suggested it was a chronic sinus disease.
Eventually, when the pain was really excruciating, Mary McCarthy went to the hospital. The x-ray revealed that there was something in the woman’s nose that was possibly the source of the problems. The 45-year-old went to the operating table. Imagine the surprise of the surgeons when they found a yellow flea puck in the woman’s nostrils.
“I’ve had a hard time breathing through my nose for years, but I’ve never thought about it more or looked for the cause,” admitted Mary McCarthy.

Thanks to the operation, the 45-year-old was finally able to breathe properly and felt no discomfort. According to doctors, a nasal swab (taken as part of the COVID-19 test) caused the toy to get stuck even deeper in the nostrils, causing infection. This – paradoxically – in effect helped the woman.
The unfortunate game of Pchełki
Mary McCarthy probably blocked her nose when she was eight. The woman remembers that it was at this age that she played Pchełki. Children, as children, instead of playing according to the rules, invented their own game. They put tiny discs in their nose and tried to blow them out. The 45-year-old admits that one day the toy simply got stuck in her nostrils. The woman did nothing about it because she was afraid to tell her mother.
