It would seem that cold is the best conditions for long-term storage of food. Therefore, we clog the refrigerator more tightly so that suddenly something does not disappear. In fact, low temperatures are contraindicated for some foods, and there are probably foods in your fridge that should not belong there.
Tomatoes
If you buy unripe tomatoes, know that they do not ripen in the cold and that they end up on your table green, tasteless and lethargic – this is how the cold affects them. It is correct to store tomatoes in a ventilated container, in which there is a lot of light, so they will become ripe and fragrant.
Potato
Another vegetable that tastes worse if left in the refrigerator is potatoes. The starch will quickly turn into sugar at low temperatures and the potatoes will become sweet and tough. Store potatoes in an air-tight bag in a cool place such as a balcony or pantry.
Avocado
A ripe avocado needs cold, but an unripe avocado, like a tomato, is best left at room temperature. In the refrigerator, unripe fruit will remain firm and cottony in taste. Put it on the window and enjoy the taste in a few days.
Honey
In the refrigerator, honey crystallizes faster and becomes sugared. Honey is one of the few products that can be stored for a long time without compromising quality. Just put the jar of honey in a dark place, tightly covering it with a lid.
Bread
If you do not calculate the portions of the purchased bread, alas, its drying out or dampness is inevitable. And the refrigerator will only intensify these processes. Bread can be frozen, tightly wrapped in a bag, or dried with rusks from it – they will lie perfectly for several months.
Onion and garlic
Garlic in the refrigerator “empties” – it loses its structure, juices and taste. Onions simply take space away from something more important, because they can be stored perfectly even without a refrigerator. Store them in a dark place in a well-ventilated bag and periodically sort out the sprouted heads.
Sauces
Sauces based on oil or vinegar do not need refrigeration. Sauces prepared on fermented milk bases are stored in the refrigerator door. Ketchup contains many preservatives, so even opened at room temperature, it does not disappear for a long time and does not lose its taste.
Greens
Do you not notice how quickly the greens wither in the refrigerator? There are two ways out: either freeze finely chopped greens, or store them at room temperature, in a dark place and preferably in a glass of water.
Citrus
Unpeeled lemons, oranges, grapefruits are well stored without a refrigerator, but peeled peels are best eaten immediately or put in the refrigerator overnight. In the refrigerator, citrus quickly rots and molds.
Vegetable oils
In the refrigerator, the oil quickly thickens, becomes cloudy and loses its beneficial properties. It will be especially a pity for elite expensive oils. Any oil must be stored in a place where sunlight does not get in – that’s enough.
