Folovit for folic acid deficiencies in women. How does the drug work?

Folovit is used to prevent folic acid deficiency in women one month before conception and in the first trimester of pregnancy in order to prevent the development of congenital malformations of the fetal nervous system. The active substance of the preparation is folic acid. The product is in the form of tablets for oral administration and is dispensed without a prescription.

Folovit – indications and dosage

Folovit is a preparation recommended for the prevention of folic acid deficiency in women:

  1. one month before the planned pregnancy,
  2. in the first trimester of pregnancy to prevent the development of congenital malformations of the fetal nervous system.

Dosage of the preparation

Folovit is in the form of tablets to be taken orally. Do not exceed the recommended dose of folic acid as it may endanger your life or health.

  1. Orally 1 tablet / day.

Folovit and contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation is a contraindication to taking Folovit.

Folovit – warnings

  1. Folovit should be used with caution in people with epilepsy, damage to the brain tissue or spinal cord.
  2. Pregnant and breast-feeding women can use the preparation.
  3. Before the next pregnancy, women who have had children with neural tube defects should be provided with genetic counseling, and at least 3 months before pregnancy, supplementation with folic acid in higher doses, as recommended by a doctor.

Folovit and other substances

  1. Folic acid deficiency can be caused by: anti-tuberculosis drugs, oral contraceptives, cytostatics, folic acid antagonists (aminopterin, sulfonamides, methotrexate, trimethoprim, triamterene, sulfasalazine).
  2. Simultaneous administration of folic acid and phenytoin requires monitoring of plasma levels of phenytoin and possible dose increase.
  3. Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium can reduce the absorption of folic acid. It is recommended to leave a 2-hour interval between taking drugs from this group and folic acid.

Folovit – side effects

Taking Folovit may cause:

  1. rash
  2. reddening of the skin,
  3. bronchospasm
  4. fever,
  5. nausea,
  6. flatulence
  7. diarrhea.
