General description of the disease
Translated from German means flow, flow… According to statistics, about 20% of patients who visit dentists suffer from this serious infectious pathology.
Flux or periostitis is a serious inflammatory process of the jaw cavity with the formation of a purulent sac.
Causes of the flux
Odontogenic periostitis occurs due to the penetration of bacteria into dental tissues. This process can be caused by:
- 1 incorrect tooth extraction;
- 2 inflammation of the gum pocket;
- 3 boils;
- 4 poor-quality installation of the seal;
- 5 the presence in the body of foci with chronic infection;
- 6 teeth affected by caries;
- 7 purulent tonsillitis;
- 8 getting an infection during an injection into the gum;
- 9 non-observance of the rules of oral hygiene;
- 10 cyst in the area of the gingival pocket;
- 11 fracture of the crown;
- 12 mechanical trauma to the oral mucosa;
- 13 temporary filling with arsenic, which was not removed in time.
The appearance of the flux can be facilitated by factors such as decreased immunity, hypothermia, increased psycho-emotional stress.
Stages of occurrence and symptoms of flux
Symptoms of pathology depend on the stage of the disease:
- at the first stage of periostitis, the patient may periodically experience unpleasant painful sensations while chewing food, in the future the pain syndrome does not subside, but only intensifies;
- at the second stage, the gum becomes inflamed and reddens, edema appears, which resembles a lump, lymph nodes may enlarge;
- puffiness extends to the cheek, chin, lip, sometimes to the eye area. This process is accompanied by acute throbbing pain and fever.
Depending on the degree of damage to the tooth tissues, the following types of fluxes are distinguished:
- 1 usual periostitis differs in damage to the periosteal tissue and slight edema;
- 2 fibrous flux has a chronic course, while a slight thickening appears in the periosteum area;
- 3 odontogenic purulent flux occurs when bacteria enter the damaged gum or manifests itself as one of the symptoms of purulent osteomyelitis;
- 4 serous fluxis usually the result of trauma to the gum or tooth. In this case, the tumor is filled with a fluid containing albumin;
- 5 ossifying flux is a chronic form of periostitis, while the periosteum is inflamed all the time.
Complications with flux
A purulent infection in the mouth spreads quickly and affects nearby hard and soft tissues. Therefore, against the background of periostitis, osteomyelitis can develop.
Do not underestimate the danger of a banal flux, it can be deadly. With untimely therapy, diffuse purulent inflammation may develop – phlegmon, in which the pus is not limited by the capsule, but spreads through the fatty tissue into the maxillofacial region and can go down to the heart. In this case, the patient’s general condition worsens, breathing and speech disorders are possible, the symmetry of the face and the mobility of the jaw change.
Flux prevention
Preventive measures include timely and high-quality oral hygiene, while using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpastes. You also need mouthwash and dental floss. It is very important to see a doctor on time if you suspect a carious tooth. It is necessary to try not to lower injuries to the jaw and teeth.
Once every 6 months, you should undergo an examination with a dentist, remove tartar on time.
Flux treatment in official medicine
At the first signs of periostitis, you should immediately consult a doctor. The dentist will do a visual examination, then order an X-ray and make a diagnosis. It is not recommended to take pain medications before visiting the dentist, as this may interfere with the diagnosis.
Periostitis therapy depends on the patient’s condition and the stage of the inflammatory process. As a rule, the dentist opens the purulent sac, in some cases, drainage is used to improve the outflow of pus. The purulent focus is opened under anesthesia. If necessary, the doctor prescribes antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and a course of physiotherapy.
There are times when it bursts spontaneously even before visiting a doctor. Then the pain subsides and the patient feels significant relief. Nevertheless, it is necessary to consult a dentist, since the purulent masses come out, and the infection in the oral cavity remains and a relapse may occur at any time.
In any case, you need to find out and eliminate the cause, which has become a factor in the development of periostitis. If the cause of the flux is pulpitis, the doctor removes the pulp and cleans the root canals. In case of periodontitis, the dentist removes the pulp, disinfects the canals and seals them. With severe inflammation, the channels are left open for a while so that the purulent masses come out.
Useful products for flux
To prevent the development of periostitis, you should eat foods that strengthen the teeth, since most often the cause of the appearance of the gumboil is neglected caries. The diet should consist of foods with a high content of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus and fluoride. Therefore, it is necessary to eat as much as possible:
- cottage cheese, kefir, yogurt, yogurt, hard and processed cheese, milk and butter;
- chicken and quail eggs;
- porridge: buckwheat, wheat, oatmeal, lentil;
- hard vegetables and fruits such as apples, carrots, pears, cucumbers;
- beef and pork liver;
