Vaginal infections and inflammations can be particularly troublesome – the constant burning and itching sensations make everyday life difficult and cause serious discomfort. Fluomizin is a medicine that works against bacteria that can cause vaginitis. The drug is prescribed by a doctor to treat a local infection. In order to achieve the best treatment results, it is essential to follow the rules of the drug application.

Fluomizin – what kind of drug is it?

The active substance of the drug Fluomizin is dequalinium chloride, which is a substance from the group of antiseptic drugs. The drug is most often prescribed by doctors for topical treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Each pack of the medicine contains a blister with 6 white vaginal tablets. Fluomizin – mechanism of action

Dequalinium chloride, the active substance in Fluomizin, belongs to the group of anti-infective and disinfectant drugs. Dequalinium chloride acts against bacteria that can cause bacterial vaginosis.

Fluomizin is used to treat bacterial vaginosis. The drug is inserted into the vagina to treat the infection locally.

Dequalinium chloride is a surfactant. The main mechanism of action is to make the bacterial cell more permeable and then lose enzyme activity, eventually leading to cell death. Dequalinium chloride has a rapid bactericidal effect. The dequalinium chloride in vaginal tablets acts locally in the vagina.

The bactericidal effect of dequalinium chloride occurs after 30-60 minutes, the maximum concentration occurring locally within the first hour after application of the medicinal product is considered to be decisive for its effectiveness.

Here are the species of bacteria that are usually sensitive to the drug:

  1. Enterococcus faecalis,
  2. Lactobacillus spp.,
  3. Staphylococcusaureus,
  4. Streptococcus agalactiae (paciorkowcegrupy B),
  5. Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococci),
  6. Enterobacterspp.,
  7. Escherichia coli
  8. Klebsiella spp.,
  9. Pseudomonasspp.,
  10. Serratiaspp.,
  11. atopobium spp.,
  12. Bacteroidesspp.,
  13. Fusobacterium,
  14. Gardnerella vaginalis,
  15. Prevotella spp.,
  16. Peptostreptococcus spp.,
  17. Poryphyromonasspp.

After dissolving a Fluomizin vaginal tablet (10 mg dequalinium chloride) in an approximate volume of 2,5 to 5 ml of vaginal discharge, the concentration of dequalinium chloride in the vaginal discharge is 2000-4000 mg / l.

Fluomizin – how to use?

Fluomizin in the form of vaginal tablets should be used in the evening before bedtime, by inserting them deep into the vagina, preferably in the supine position with slightly bent legs. The administration of the medicinal product should be discontinued during and continued after menstruation.

A marked reduction in inflammation and vaginal discharge is generally felt after 24 to 72 hours, however, treatment should not be stopped, even if symptoms (itching, discharge, odor) have subsided. Treatment lasting less than 6 days may cause symptoms to come back.

Fluomizin contains excipients that do not dissolve completely, so remnants of the tablet may sometimes remain on the underwear. This does not affect the efficacy of Fluomizin.

Fluomizin – side effects and warnings

Fluomizin should always be used according to the doctor’s instructions – any excess or omission of the dose may cause side effects or interfere with the treatment and its effectiveness. Inform your doctor about any chronic diseases and other medications you are taking.

Like any medicinal preparation, Fluomizin may cause side effects. The most common are vaginal discharge and itching or thrush. Less frequent are vaginal bleeding, vaginitis and vulvitis, pain in the intimate area or fungal dermatitis, headaches and nausea. Adverse reactions caused by the use of Fluomizin should be reported to the attending physician.

Do not use the drug during menstruation – if it begins after starting treatment with this preparation, Fluomizin should be discontinued and resumed at the end of menstruation.

The excipients of the drug do not dissolve completely, so they may flow out of the vagina as white mucus and remain on the woman’s underwear – this is not cause for concern. In such a situation, panty liners or sanitary napkins can be used. If treatment does not work, it may be that the infection is not bacterial in nature or is due to a strain resistant to dequalinium chloride.

Fluomizin – interactions with other drugs

Anionic substances such as soaps, detergents, and surfactants can reduce the antimicrobial effect of dequalinium chloride. Concomitant use of vaginal soaps, spermicides or irrigation is not recommended.

Fluomizin vaginal tablets do not interfere with the functionality of latex condoms. It is not recommended to use non-latex condoms or other vaginal agents concomitantly for at least 12 hours after application.

Fluomizin – pregnancy and breastfeeding

Flumizin should be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Fluomizin can be used during lactation if clinically indicated. To minimize exposure of the newborn to dequalinium chloride, vaginal tablets should not be used 12 hours before delivery.
