Flu – How Dangerous Is It? Complications after the flu

– I don’t remember how many days I stayed in the hospital. It came after two or three days of fever. I was recovering for half a year – remembers Ola. And Janek’s mother said it was supposed to be an ordinary cold, but then she was afraid for the life of her child for the first time. Ola and Janek’s mother never met. However, they have a history in common with the background flu.

Ola is 39 years old today. He lives in England. Together with her husband, they went to the Islands to work. The woman grew up in the south of Poland. In Krakow, she started her studies and her first job. – I was young, healthy, full of life and plans. I earned some extra money for my studies as a receptionist.

On that unlucky day, my colleagues from work were going to the clinic for the flu vaccination. It was the beginning of October. The cold season has started. They urged me: – Ola, come with us. It costs a few zlotys and you will have a disease-free winter. Everyone is vaccinating now. It’s worth it.

That year I was getting ready for a difficult winter session. I thought that I would not like to be sick then. At least once in the fall and winter season, I caught a cold. Now I didn’t have time for that! I went with my friends to be vaccinated against the flu and … in the evening I got a strong fever.

Death looked into your eyes

What happened to me after that surprised me completely. Strong fever, chills, exhausting cough, excruciating sore throat, nausea … My whole body ached. When I got out of bed to go to the bathroom, I banged on the doorframe because I couldn’t correctly judge distances. I had vision and hearing problems. The cough was literally tearing my chest apart. The doctor said that I was extremely unlucky: at the same time I had flu and tonsillitis. He prescribed an antibiotic. At home, I managed to take the first dose. It went dark in front of my eyes, I felt myself sinking to the floor. Parents called an ambulance but they said they could be in 15 minutes. And we lived five minutes from the hospital! My mom asked a neighbor to drive me to the emergency room in his car. By this time, I was already losing consciousness. My mom later told me she was terrified. – Death looked into your eyes …

What happened after the antibiotic? I stopped breathing! A neighbor drove me to the entrance to the emergency room, and a resuscitation team was waiting for me there. They pulled me out of the car blue, unconscious. A young girl who had never been more seriously ill before. Mum burst into tears. She begged God not to take me.

The resuscitation was successful. I was placed in a hospital ward. The cause of my severe and sudden collapse was a constriction of my windpipe. As one of the symptoms of an unusually strong flu. I do not remember exactly how much time I spent in the hospital, but after that I was on sick leave for almost half a year. Why so long? Because the flu did not give up, and more precisely – there were further post-flu complications. The most dangerous: myocarditis. Since then, I have had mitral regurgitation. But problems with the labyrinth and a persistent, lasting cough also persisted for a long time.

Amelka is a case in the registry

A few years ago, I witnessed a drama of a close friend of mine. Her daughter fell into a coma after receiving the vaccine. She was then about half a year old. It is impossible to describe the drama of the parents and this helpless child. Dorota and I were going through the Internet for many hours and we were looking for answers, how could this have happened? What irretrievably destroyed the health of little Amelka? The answer was quite simple: the girl suffered undesirable post-vaccination complications. In short, the side effects of the vaccine have ruined her. A healthy and well-concealed baby …

At that time, I began to associate some facts from my life. That the acute flu I got sick with when I was young also happened after vaccination. I remembered talking to the doctor when my mother and I were asking if there could be a relationship.

But he categorically denied it. He said it was an unfortunate coincidence and said, “The flu is like that.” You never know what its course will be. It is a serious disease.

I didn’t inquire any more, because I was just glad that I had come out of it at all. That I am alive. I met a fantastic boy, got married … I lead a normal life. However, I admit that I shudder at the very thought of vaccinating at my own request. I do not want to discourage anyone, I know that there are people who get vaccinated against flu regularly and ensure that they have not been ill for years. And I believe them, each organism reacts differently. However, I prefer to stay away from vaccines. Even my mother admitted that as a young child I did not take the compulsory vaccinations well. I always had an elevated temperature after them. I cried, I was grumpy and irritable. In high school, the post-tuberculosis vaccination trial was messy. However, who at that time thought about it? The nurse warned that there might be some inconveniences, so there were. And they passed. It was just like that.

The case of little Amelka was recorded in a special register in the UK as NOP, i.e. Adverse Vaccine Reaction. My friend’s daughter received compensation. Unfortunately, it is still in serious condition. And there is no chance of recovery. Meanwhile, I learned from a friend that vaccines, which are to be withdrawn in the UK because they cause too many side effects in children, will be used in Poland. Is it true? I do not know. I know one thing: I would not vaccinate my own child!

Janek’s story. It was supposed to be an ordinary flu.

– That day I picked up Janek from school and it immediately struck me that he was somewhat moody. At home he whined at dinner. He wanted to go to sleep. After two hours, I woke him up. He was hot, pajamas wet with sweat – the boy’s mother recalls. When the fever was almost 40 degrees Celsius, I called an ambulance. They came but did not take the child to the hospital. The ambulance doctor said that the next day we were to go to the clinic with the little one. It’s probably the flu.

At the clinic, Janek poured over my hands. I took him to the bathroom. He wanted to vomit. They took us in without a queue. The doctor made a diagnosis: flu. I talked to her for a long time about the need for an antibiotic. I didn’t want to, but she convinced me it was necessary. Nevertheless, the 40-degree fever persisted for the next two days. My little son was delirious at night. When the temperature hit 41 degrees and blood appeared in the vomit, we didn’t wait any longer for the disease to disappear. We took the baby to the hospital.

It was “ordinary” flu

Janek spent five days in the hospital. The fever has subsided. We came back home, but for about a week the little one did not get out of bed, and in the next week he could barely shuffle his feet. He still coughed, died, and ate little. Fortunately, he stopped vomiting and complaining of pain all over his body. On the other hand, he was very weak and moody. Not that baby! I cooked him special dishes to strengthen his body. We went out for short walks to make him resilient. I didn’t let my son go to school until he completely recovered. When he made up for some lost pounds and began to complain that he was bored at home. We also did a series of tests, most of them privately, to check that the flu had left no permanent traces in the body. We checked the heart and lungs. We did an abdominal ultrasound, blood and urine tests. I went with my son to an ENT specialist, and even for allergy tests. Luckily, the little one is healthy. Yes, it was “ordinary flu” at the time. The first (and hopefully the last time) I was afraid for the life of my only child.
