Luxurious well-groomed flower beds in the courtyard of a private house are not just a flower arrangement, but a bright element of the style and design of a personal plot. Each hostess strives to create comfort in her home by arranging colorful flowering flower beds with her own hands. In order for flower beds to become a real decoration, to please the owners and guests of the house for a long time, their creation must be approached carefully and with all responsibility – the image and general atmosphere of the site and the house depend on how correctly the flower beds are broken and the plants are planted.
Territory allocation planning
Planning a flower bed should begin with drawing up a site plan on a piece of paper. So, it will be easier to plan not only the place reserved for the flower garden, but also take into account all the nuances that arise during its design: the amount of planting material, illumination, relief. To make the flower beds in the courtyard of the house look aesthetically pleasing, you should think over their shape in advance:
- if straight geometric shapes and lines prevail on the site, it is better to make flower beds of a rectangular elongated shape with a width of no more than 2,5 m – it is more difficult to care for a wider flower bed;
- if the site is asymmetric, it is better to equip the flower beds in the form of winding lines, irregular shapes – this form will naturally merge into the general landscape and form a single space with it.
When arranging a flower garden with your own hands, it is also necessary to take into account the relief of the site. If the flowers are planted in a lowland, then the soil will be constantly wet, which is not suitable for all plants. If the flower garden is located on a slope, then after heavy rainfall, soil and even plants may be washed out. Flower arrangements on uneven surfaces are best done in the form of stone alpine slides – large stones will hold plants and soil in case of water runoff. Next, you should decide on the location of the flower beds:
- the territory at the central entrance of a private house is more priority – here you can place three-dimensional compositions of several types of flowers, you can equip a rose garden, rock garden, rose garden and other design elements;
- the central and front part of the garden in a private house is also a suitable option – in the center it is better to arrange large round compositions, alpine slides, for the front part a long narrow flower garden of any shape is more suitable;
- a recreation area in a private house near the terrace, gazebos – small compositions in soothing colors are appropriate here;
- along the paths and the fence – here, as a rule, they break long narrow flower beds with undersized flowers;
- if there is a lawn in a private house, then the flower arrangements located on it will look very advantageous, creating a contrast with the greenery – it can be an alpine slide, modular combinations with paving;
- vertical flower beds with ampelous plants will become a real decoration of a private house – they can be arranged on the terrace, by the pool or by the gazebo.
Equipping flower beds with your own hands, do not forget that all plants reach for the sun. It is not advisable to plant flower arrangements in the shade of trees, in the back of the site.

Requirements for the colors themselves
Choosing flowers for a flower bed should be deliberate, considering the following points:
- All plants bloom at a certain time, and the flower garden should be fragrant from spring to autumn. To ensure continuous flowering of the composition, the plants must be planted in the correct sequence: primroses in early spring, then tulips, daffodils, asters in summer. The backbone of the composition should be perennial flowers, and annuals are planted throughout the season.
- In order for the plants to feel comfortable, it is necessary to take into account the illumination of certain sections of the flower bed. For example, tulips love the sun, they need to be planted in the central part, lilies of the valley and irises feel more comfortable next to perennials: phlox, lilies, which shade them a little.
- It is better to plant flowers in solid lines, and not randomly – such flower beds look more aesthetically pleasing.
- When planting plants, large gaps between rows and plants should be avoided – unoccupied soil spoils the look of the composition, in addition, weeds quickly grow in these places.
- Plants in the flower garden should be located at different levels. The tallest ones should be planted in the center, the lower ones closer to the edge.
- Flowers in rich colors create an accent of the composition (usually planted in the central part), light colors are the background. Color contrast is a prerequisite for making a colorful flower bed.
- In the far part of the territory of a private house, flowers of dark and neutral shades look more advantageous, bright ones: yellow, red are ideal for the foreground. White color is neutral, it is used to dilute the color scheme.
We form a flower garden
Creating a flower garden with your own hands in the yard of your own house is not so difficult. You need to start by transferring the drawn sketch to the soil, and then clearly imagine how the flower garden itself should look. Further formation of the flower bed occurs as follows:
- With the help of a rope and a peg, we mark the borders of the flower garden.
- We bring all the necessary planting material: soil, drainage, seeds, seedlings, fertilizers.
- Further, we dig up the territory allocated for the flower garden, mix the soil with mineral fertilizers for flowers. If nothing has been grown on the ground for a long time, it is necessary to remove the top layer of soil, grind it, sift it carefully, choosing stones, weeds, grass. Only then apply fertilizer.
- A layer of drainage should be laid under a long even flower bed (rabatka): gravel, beaten brick so that the water does not stagnate.
- Next, we moisten the soil well.
- Then we start planting flowers. Round and figured flower beds should be planted from the center, moving to the edges so as not to trample the plants. Long flower beds are planted sequentially.
- The final touch is the laying of the border. Figured decorations, original stones, wooden fences, ready-made borders bought at a hardware store – everything that has enough imagination and money will do.
How to equip flower beds with your own hands
A flower garden, equipped with your own hands in the courtyard of a private house, is in some way a hallmark of the property and its owners. The first impression about the house itself and the tastes of the people living in it depends on it. The originality of forms, the unusual color scheme, the arrangement of flowers – everything must be taken into account when creating flower beds. The most common are the following options for arranging flower beds in a private house:
- Geometric flower bed. Such a flower garden is characterized by the correct geometric shape: rectangle, rhombus, oval, circle. They are usually placed in the center of private ownership, or on a hill. Flowers are planted in even rows, or in rings if the composition is round. This standard flower garden option is suitable for any landscape style.
- Border, or paved flower beds. Border materials can be not only the final element of a flower arrangement, but also the basis of an independent flower garden. Flowers planted between beautiful stone paving look very original, and making such beauty with your own hands in a private house is quite easy. You just need to lay out the curb material on the ground, and plant low bushy plants (no higher than 25 cm) between the stones.
- Rabatki. These are long flower beds in the form of beds, and are ideal for masking building defects. They can be located along walls, fences, footpaths in the yard. Rabatki – the most common option for creating compositions with your own hands. It uses the same type of flowers, which are planted in stripes, zigzags, snake.
- Mixborder. This is a composition of many different, but compatible with each other flowers and plants. In a do-it-yourself mixborder in a private house, perennials, annual flowers, and even small ornamental trees usually grow together. Therefore, the flower garden is fragrant and changes throughout the season.
- Rock garden. This is a composition that imitates a natural rocky landscape, interspersed with bright colors between rocky stones. To give the hill a natural look, real alpine plants are planted, but if there are none, you can use those that look like them.
The landscape design of the backyard territory is not a set of strict rules for organizing space, but ample opportunities for fantasy and imagination. Inventing and decorating with your own hands picturesque corners in your own garden, at your summer cottage, you create a unique coziness and comfort for living in the house.
