Grouse flower is the popular name for fritillaria, a herbaceous plant from the lily family. It grows throughout the northern hemisphere and in Asia. This flower is suitable for growing in all cities of our country with a temperate climate.
The hazel grouse looks like a tiny palm tree, the top of which is hung with flowers. They resemble inverted bells, can grow one at a time, or gather in umbrella groups. The color of the flowers is varied – purple, white, red, etc. After flowering interesting fruits are formed – hexagonal capsules with small grains.
Here are the most popular varieties of this plant:
- chess. Height – 35 cm. One or two bells of bright purple color. The bells are covered with a characteristic checkerboard pattern, hence the name;
- royal. The second name is imperial. Height – 110-120 cm. The flower of the royal hazel grouse is colored orange. It has yellow veins and a brown spot at the base;
- Persian. Originally from the Asian hinterland. Colored in a rich beetroot color;
- limelight. Height 50-60 cm. The flowers are green, covered with olive spots. Sometimes there are specimens of brown-emerald color;
- gray. Miniature plant up to 15 cm in height. The flowers are yellow-gold, elongated, with brown spots inside.
All presented varieties put forward the same care requirements.
For planting, choose sunny or semi-shaded areas of the garden with light, fertile and moderately damp soil. Provide good drainage for the plant.
This flower is grown from bulbs. Dig up the garden before planting, add sand, a little peat or humus to the soil. Planting depth is three times the diameter of the bulb.
Grouse blooms in early spring, as soon as the snow melts
Watering the plant is often unnecessary. Just make sure the ground is not too dry. After flowering, water the bushes no more than 1-2 times a month. Fertilize the flower for the first time at the end of April. Add a tablespoon of agriculture under each bush. If the plant has already bloomed, mix this fertilizer with humus. The second feeding is needed after the end of flowering – 1 tablespoon of superphosphate for each bush.
Try growing one of the varieties of hazel grouse in your garden. This plant looks great and does not require any complicated maintenance. It is suitable for beginners in floriculture.
