Floor creaks: what to do, how to get rid of wooden floor creaks? Video
Only in old buildings with a rich history does the creak of floorboards excite the imagination and convey the spirit of bygone days. Faced with such a phenomenon in a modern apartment, it is difficult to experience anything other than irritation. In this article, you will learn how to get rid of the squeak of a wooden floor if its complete replacement is impossible for some reason.
How to fix the squeak of a wooden floor or parquet without opening
There are several simple ways to get rid of a squeak without removing the floor covering:
- Candles… The seams between the floorboards must be carefully coated with a wax or stearin candle.
- Cement… You need to check each board and find one that doesn’t fit snugly. Having drilled a hole in it, pour the liquid cement mixture into it with a syringe. The solution must be injected several times, allowing it to be absorbed, and fill the space under the board.
- Wooden pins… Along the length of the seam between the floorboards, holes with a diameter of 8 mm are drilled at intervals of 50 cm and at an angle of 45 degrees. In each of them, pins are fixed with glue, and the protruding caps are sanded flush with the floor.
- Mounting foam… Foam is introduced into the cavity between the parquet boards. After it increases in size, the floor will become hard and the squeaking will stop.
- Sealant… A special wood sealant (with sawdust) is poured into the seams between the floorboards.
- Self-tapping screws… If the squeak is caused by the friction of the floorboards against the logs, you can fasten them together with self-tapping screws at an interval of 10-15 cm.
All of these methods allow you to fill in voids that cause squeaking, as well as add additional rigidity to the old parquet flooring.
If simple methods do not work, you can make more time-consuming repair work:
- Plywood. Plywood sheets with a thickness of at least 12 mm are laid along the perimeter of the entire room. Each sheet is fixed on the old parquet with self-tapping screws, which are screwed in every 15 cm.
- Replacement of individual floorboards. If boards are found that emit a creak, they can be removed and replaced with new ones by attaching them to the logs with self-tapping screws or nails.
Before repairing a wooden floor, it is important to establish the cause of the squeak and pinpoint all the culprits. Only in this case it will become clear which method will solve the problem.
Whichever method of repair you choose, the final stage should be additional processing of the floor. The remaining cracks must be sealed with mastic for wood, after which all floorboards must be varnished or varnish. This will give your old floor a new lease of life and serve you for years to come.
