Flavamed – action, use and recommended precautions

Flavamed is an over-the-counter expectorant that is used in the course of lung and bronchial diseases accompanied by the accumulation of thick mucus. Flavamed dilutes the secretion in the respiratory tract and facilitates its expectoration. The active substance, ambroxol hydrochloride, is responsible for the action of the drug.

Flavamed – indications for use

Tabletki Flavamed is a drug suitable for adults, adolescents and children over 6 years of age. It thins the mucus and is used in the case of respiratory diseases, mainly chronic or acute diseases of the lungs and bronchi. The main indication to reach for Flavamed is the production of a thick secretion in the course of the aforementioned diseases. The use of Flavamed causes thinning of the secretions in the respiratory tract. The more watery mucus allows the patient to cough up more easily.

Flavamed – drug action

The main ingredient of Flavamed is ambroxol, an active substance belonging to the group of mucolytic drugs. As a result of the action of the drug, the viscosity of the secretion is reduced and the transport of mucus is improved. After taking a dose of Flavamed, its effects are observed after 30 minutes. They last for about 6-12 hours.

Flavamed – composition

Flavamed tablets include ambroxol hydrochloride (30 mg in one tablet) and the following auxiliary substances: lactose monohydrate (40 mg in one tablet), cellulose, sodium croscarmellose, maize starch, magnesium stearate, povidone K 30.

Flavamed – the appearance of the tablets

Flavamed tablets are white, round and flat on both sides. The edges are bevelled and there is a score line on one side, allowing you to divide the tablet into two equal portions.

Flavamed – contraindications and warnings

The use of Flavamed is not recommended for children younger than 6 years of age and for people allergic to ambroxol hydrochloride or other substances contained in the medicinal product. Some people should also be especially careful and consult their doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine. This is especially true for Lyell’s syndrome and Stevens-Johnson syndrome in the past.

Attention

In the event of acute skin reactions during the use of Flavamed, including rashes on mucous membranes, the drug should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted.

Medical advice before reaching for the preparation is also recommended in the case of severe liver disease, renal dysfunction, gastric and duodenal ulcer disease, as well as rare bronchial diseases accompanied by increased mucus secretion – an example may be the syndrome of immobile cilia.

In the case of pregnant women, taking Flavamed is possible only on the express recommendation of a doctor. The drug is not recommended especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. It should also not be used by breastfeeding women.

Flavamed – dosage

Flavamed should be used according to the doctor’s recommendations or the dosage suggested in the leaflet. This is necessary for the medicine to work properly. The tablets are administered orally, swallowed the appropriate portion whole with a meal and washed down with liquid (water, juice or tea). The tablet can be halved if necessary.

Dosage of Flavamed for children from 6 to 12 years of age should be as follows – half a tablet is administered 2 to 3 times a day. During the day, you cannot exceed a dose exceeding 1,5 tablets, i.e. 45 mg of the active substance (ambroxol).

Adolescents over 12 years of age and adults should take:

  1. in the first two or three days of treatment – 1 tablet 3 times a day (3 times 30 mg ambroxol);
  2. in the following days – 1 tablet 2 times a day (2 times under 30 mg of ambroxol;
  3. no more than 3 tablets (90 mg ambroxol) per day.
Attention

Flavamed should not be used for more than 4-5 days in the absence of prior consultation with a doctor. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen after this treatment time, you should see your doctor. Such consultation is also advisable if the drug’s action is too strong or too weak.

Overdosing or dosing not in accordance with the recommendations may lead to the appearance of side effects that require symptomatic treatment.

Flavamed – side effects

The use of Flavamed is associated with the possibility of side effects such as:

  1. nausea;
  2. stomach pain;
  3. indigestion;
  4. vomiting;
  5. diarrhea;
  6. anaphylactic reactions (anaphylactic shock or angioedema);
  7. severe skin changes (toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, acute generalized pustulosis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome).

These side effects do not necessarily occur, but if any of them occur to the patient, immediate discontinuation of the drug is required.

Flavamed – types of medicine

In addition to Flavamed tablets providing 30 mg of ambroxol hydrochloride, the drug appeared in the form of effervescent tablets (60 mg), Flavamed max oral solution (30 mg / 5 ml) and Flavamed syrup (15 mg / 5 ml).
