Flatulence: Causes and Treatment of Bloating. Video
Flatulence is not an independent disease. Excessive flatulence in the intestines, bloating, abdominal discomfort and belching are indicative of a problem in the body. Treatment of the disease is carried out on the basis of a comprehensive examination and the results of the patient’s tests.
Flatulence: causes and symptoms
Flatulence can be provoked by a sharp change in the nature of nutrition, gastrointestinal diseases, pregnancy and other factors. As a result, excess air is excreted from the body through the rectum, often with an unpleasant odor. The gases in the abdomen contain nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Depending on what caused the appearance of the disease, several of its forms are distinguished:
- alimentary flatulence
- flatulence against the background of a violation of the digestive processes
- mechanical flatulence
- dynamic flatulence
- circulatory flatulence
- psychogenic flatulence
Excessive consumption of foods rich in fiber can cause alimentary flatulence. It is not possible to carry out self-treatment here; it is necessary to visit a qualified specialist, as a rule, a nutritionist. Especially dangerous are dietary restrictions without a doctor’s testimony.
Increased gas formation caused by mechanical obstacles is much more dangerous. It may indicate the presence of an oncological disease, therefore, for any abnormalities in the work of the gastrointestinal tract, it is very important to consult a surgeon and a proctologist in time.
The cause of flatulence is often lactose deficiency, smooth muscle spasm caused by stress, as well as climbing to a height. The wrong diet is also a source of the onset of the disease.
In case of circulatory disorders in the intestine, for example, with stagnation of blood in the veins, a circulatory form of flatulence may occur. Here is indicated therapy with drugs or blood thinning products.
Unpleasant flatulence, which occurs against the background of mental abnormalities. It is usually caused by hysteria or depression.
Symptoms of excess gas formation in the intestines are a feeling of fullness and heaviness, bloating, aching stomach pains after eating. Sometimes cramping attacks occur, which subside after 20-30 minutes. Moreover, in some cases, there is a frequent and noisy discharge of gases, in others – their delay. In addition, belching, nausea, constipation or diarrhea begin, an unpleasant taste is felt in the mouth, and a decrease in appetite. Other organs, such as the heart, head, or even throat, may ache along with these symptoms.
Flatulence can occur in any person, regardless of age. It is especially common in pregnant women and infants.
Treatment of flatulence is carried out only after finding out the causes of its occurrence. The doctor prescribes drug therapy, which should be combined with a special diet. You do not need to eat large quantities of cabbage, legumes, fresh bread, cakes, ice cream. At the discretion of the specialist, these products can be excluded altogether for the duration of the treatment. Also, you can not drink carbonated drinks.
As a rule, adsorbing drugs, enzymes, antispasmodics are prescribed. With the help of such a complex therapy, the normal functioning of the intestines and stomach is restored. If the cause of flatulence is mechanical damage, surgical intervention is recommended.
Drugs that help get rid of the disease can be divided into three groups:
- those that block the production of gases (“Espumisan”, “Disflatil”, “Pepsan-R”)
- drugs that accelerate the elimination of gases (for example, “Motilium”)
- plant-based preparations that are suitable for pregnant women and children, for example, “Plantex”, fennel and dill fruits
If flatulence occurs in newborns, it is allowed to give 10 ml of dill water before each feeding, while it is necessary to exclude tight swaddling. Pediatricians in difficult cases recommend the introduction of a gas tube. And as a preventive measure, it is good to use massage around the navel in a clockwise direction. In this case, pressure should be avoided.
Folk remedies for flatulence
Medicinal therapy can be combined with folk remedies, for example, with the help of dandelion inflorescences. It is necessary to pour 60 g of flowers in 200 ml of cold boiled water, leave for 8 hours, strain. Drink 50 ml 4 times a day before each meal. Or, brew 20 g of crushed dill seeds in 350 ml of boiling water, wait at least 2-3 hours, and then consume 50 ml 3 times a day. Decoctions of mint and chamomile cope well with flatulence.
With fetid feces, the use of 500 ml of a weak warm infusion of spherical eucalyptus leaves on an empty stomach will help. If you use this herbal remedy, you can get rid of infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
As a preventive measure, you should not follow strict diets based on the use of only protein or fats. In addition, physical activities such as yoga or swimming are helpful. It is undesirable to abuse laxatives and enemas without a doctor’s prescription.
