The presence of overweight and obesity

Overweight and obesity are most often the result of exceeding the amount of calories consumed in relation to energy expenditure. Such a situation gives rise to many diseases and ailments. Abdominal obesity causes, among other things, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism disorders, and may also contribute to the development of arterial hypertension.

Low consumption of fruit and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are primarily a source of antioxidants that help fight free radicals that destroy our cells, and also improve the metabolism – dietary fiber. They also contain a large dose of potassium, which affects the proper functioning of the circulatory system. If there is not enough fruit and vegetables in the diet, a pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory state will appear in the body, which in turn can lead to hypertension.

High amount of salt in the diet

Everyone is well aware that excess salt in the diet is a predisposing factor to hypertension. Moreover, this situation causes an increased loss of potassium in the urine. The sodium requirement in adults is 1,5 g per day and it decreases with age.

Low n-3 PUFA intake

Essential fatty acids are very important for our body. We are unable to synthesize them, so it is necessary to provide them with food on a regular basis. Their sources are vegetable oils (rapeseed, linseed, soybean), fish, marine mammals, yolk, soybeans, and walnuts. Inadequate amount of n -3 PUFA in the diet increases the tendency to hypertension, and also induces a pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic state.

High in the diet of saturated fatty acids and trans fatty acids

The highest levels of saturated fat are found in meat and animal fats. On the other hand, all confectionery products, fast food dishes, processed products such as teabags, and even meals fried in oil at home abound in trans fats. Excess of both in the diet leads to higher levels of triglycerides and low-LDL lipoproteins in the blood and a reduction in the level of HDL cholesterol called ‘good cholesterol’. It can also lead to an increase in the blood pro-clotting status.
