First case of avian flu in a duck in a year in Romania

The European Commission confirmed on Tuesday that the first case of H5N1 avian influenza virus in a year in a year was detected in a duck in the Danube Delta, close to the Ukrainian border, in Romania.

As reported by the European Commission, this is the first confirmed case of H5N1 avian influenza in the EU in a year. The last one was detected in March 2009 in wild ducks in Germany.

The European Commission has been informed by the Romanian authorities that to limit the spread of the virus, the necessary control measures have been immediately implemented and a high-risk area has been established on poultry farms within a radius of 10 km from where the duck with avian influenza virus was detected.

According to experts, the duck was most likely infected by wild birds migrating from the Middle East to Europe (PAP).
