First aid for groin injuries

Injuries to the groin in everyday life are not uncommon. Given the anatomical features of the structure of the groin in men and women, for the first, any sharp mechanical impact in this area of the body causes severe piercing pain, while in women, of course, there may be a bruise or injury to the groin area, but it manifests itself less painfully.

Groin injuries can occur during fights, brawls, car accidents, falls, sports, especially team sports.

The danger of such injuries for men is that, in addition to pain, the result may be a hematoma, bruising, damage to the testicles and penis, and ruptures of the urethra. For women, injuries are no less dangerous and can lead to serious consequences.

Groin injuries – manifestations and types

The main source of injury to the inguinal zone is a direct blow. It is known that the groin for men is the most painful area. Women in anti-rapist defense courses are taught groin strikes, and men often follow an unspoken “code of honor” when engaging in a fight with each other, avoiding hitting the enemy in the external genital area, because they know firsthand how much it hurts.

The anatomical feature of the structure of the body of a man determines the location of the sensitive external genitalia in the groin – one of the most vulnerable places on the body. There are a huge number of nerve endings and blood vessels in this place, so the consequences of a blow can be very dangerous for the victim.

Why do groin injuries occur? The most common causes are hitting a ball, falling on the crotch, animal bites, hitting, forced sexual intercourse or activities involving tugging at the base of the penis, horseback riding.

The danger of injury to this part of the human body for a man is obvious – as a result, temporary infertility for up to 9 months may appear, which is quite capable of developing into a permanent one. The victim may develop a hormonal disorder due to reduced testosterone production. The resulting testicular atrophy subsequently forms tumors. In rare cases, even cases of death from pain shock are known. As a result of mechanical action on the nerve endings, located in large numbers in the groin, a person feels a sharp blinding pain.

A significant group of all groin injuries in medicine is divided into two main subgroups: testicular injuries and penile injuries. Both of them can be open and closed. Closed injuries of the inguinal zone:

  • contusion of the penis and testicle;
  • rupture of the protein membrane;
  • infringement of the penis;
  • dislocation of the penis and testicles;
  • penis fracture;
  • torsion and crushing of the testis.

Open wounds: gunshot, stab wounds, burns and frostbite, traumatic amputation of the penis, tear and tear of the scrotum.

Characteristics of the most common herbs of the inguinal zone

A bruised scrotum is a condition that develops after a hard blow or fall. The result is soreness, bruising, bruising. A bruise may be with or without a violation of the integrity of the testicular membrane. Violations of this type can cause the development of temporary or permanent infertility, impotence.

Dislocation of the testicle occurs if the traumatic effect advances the testicle into the inguinal or pelvic canal, under the skin, or to another location that is not typical for it. The reason why the appearance of such an injury is possible is the high mobility of the testicles in the scrotal cavity. This also includes damage to the testicles, which, in fact, are a state of change in their normal shape, structure and integrity – crushing, contusion, rupture of the protein membrane, inflammation, hemorrhages in the testicle, atrophy and infarction. The testicles, placed outside the skeletal protective “framework”, are not protected from external influences, except for a thin sac – the scrotum, and their location next to the pubic bone only increases the traumatic factor. In severe cases, the affected organ has to be amputated.

Post-traumatic orchitis can develop after injury and its primary healing. The victim’s body temperature rises, the scrotum swells, severe pain appears.

Twisting of the spermatic cord leads to testicular reversal. If the angle of rotation is more than 180 degrees, blood circulation in the testicle is disturbed and tissue necrosis may begin.

In some cases, trauma to the organs in the groin area is accompanied by damage to the urethra, interruption of its integrity, or even its rupture. The process of urination is disturbed, the person feels severe pain.

Open wounds and groin injuries are often accompanied by profuse bleeding – it can be both external and internal.

This condition can contribute to the filling of the penis with a large volume of blood, since it resembles a sponge in its internal structure, and also causes large blood loss.

We must not forget about the possible stretching of the muscles and tendons in the groin. It can occur during sports (football, freestyle, swimming, cycling), due to sudden forced movements, jerks.

In this case, it is difficult for the victim to move his legs, take them to the side, he feels severe pain, which does not decrease.

Rules for providing first aid to victims

It is mandatory to call an ambulance, or take urgent measures to transport the patient to a medical facility. A person needs complete rest, he can not walk and move. It should be laid on its back on a hard, flat surface.

Cold is placed on the site of an injury or bruise – it can be an ice pack, or a bottle of cold water. If food from the freezer is used, it must first be wrapped in a towel. Cold can be applied for no more than 2 hours, holding it for 40-50 minutes with breaks of 10-20 minutes. In winter, it is not recommended to keep the cold at the site of injury for more than an hour.

The edges of an open wound must be treated with an antiseptic, for example, iodine solution, while the cotton wool or bandage moistened with the preparation moves in the direction from the edges of the wound. The wound is covered with a sterile gauze, over which the wound is dressed.

If the patient has bleeding, it must be stopped. For this, a tourniquet or pressure bandage is applied. If it is not possible to bandage the victim, it is necessary to stop the flow of blood by clamping the inguinal artery with a fist.

Damaged genitals are lifted with a sterile bandage, and pressed against the stomach.

Usually, doctors, giving recommendations on first aid, advise not to give the victim any medicines inside, so as not to worsen his condition out of ignorance. However, in case of groin injuries, a person can take pain medication. The fact is that the pain from damage to the inguinal zone can be so strong that the patient may develop pain shock. In the most difficult cases, even the death of a person from shock before the arrival of an ambulance is possible. It should be noted that simple Ibuprofen most likely will not help – Ketanov or Tramadol is administered by intramuscular injection to the affected person.

Injuries associated with fractures require maximum immobilization of the wounded. If the location of the fracture is determined, before transporting it to the hospital, it is necessary to immobilize the affected area by applying a splint or bandage.

Groin injuries can be obtained in everyday life, and in the gym, and during the usual activities like driving a car. Unpleasant for women, for the male half, blows and mechanical impact in the groin area are critically painful and dangerous. As a result, a person may lose the external genitalia, or even die from pain shock. First aid for groin injuries aims to help the victim wait for the arrival of doctors, and prevent his condition from worsening.

It should be noted that even if the previously suffered bruise seemed insignificant and the person is already on the road to recovery, he should still see a urologist after the groin injury.
