Finding the Volume of a Cylinder: Formula and Tasks

In this publication, we will look at how you can find the volume of a cylinder and analyze examples of solving problems.

The formula for calculating the volume of a cylinder

Through base area and height

The volume (V) of a cylinder is equal to the product of its height and base area.

V = S ⋅ H

Finding the Volume of a Cylinder: Formula and Tasks

Through base radius and height

As we know, the bases of the cylinder (equal to each other) are a circle, the area of uXNUMXbuXNUMXbwhich is calculated as follows: S = π ⋅ R2. Therefore, the formula for calculating the volume of a cylinder can be represented as:

V = π ⋅ R2 ⋅ H

Note: in calculations the value of the number π rounded up to 3,14.

Through base diameter and height

As we know, the diameter of a circle is equal to two of its radii: d = 2R. So, you can calculate the volume of a cylinder as follows:

V = π ⋅ (d/2)2 ⋅ H

Examples of tasks

Task 1

Find the volume of the cylinder if the area of its base is given – 78,5 cm2, and also, height – 10 cm.

Decision:

Let’s apply the first formula, substituting the known values into it:

V=78,5cm2 ⋅ 10 cm = 785 cm3.

Task 2

The height of the cylinder is 6 cm and its diameter is 8 cm. Find the volume of the figure.

Decision:

Using the third formula, in which the diameter is involved, we get:

V = 3,14 ⋅ (8/2 cm)2 ⋅ 6 cm = 301,44 cm3.
