Ulgastran is a drug used in duodenal disease and gastric ulcer, it is a suspension that should be taken between meals and at bedtime.
What is Ulgastran and when to use it?
The active substance in Ulgastran is sucralfate. When taking the drug, it penetrates into the stomach environment, forming a kind of suspension in it, adhering to the surface of ulcerated structures. Thus, a protective barrier is created that reduces discomfort and pain accompanying the patient in everyday functioning. The drug is used primarily in gastric and duodenal ulcers.
Who shouldn’t take Ulgastran?
This medicine should not be taken by people who are allergic to the active substance or any of its ingredients. Patients with severe renal insufficiency and people on dialysis should not take this medicine. If a patient suffers from renal failure, the drug can be used for him, but in appropriate doses and for a specified period of time. This medicine should not be given to children under 14 years of age.
Other medicines and Ulgastran
You should inform your attending physician if you are taking other medications at the same time or about medications that will be taken in the near future.
Ulgastran may decrease its activity in combination with such drugs as: Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Naproxen, Fluconazole, Ketoconazole, Phenytoons, drugs used in heart diseases.
A patient who is also taking other medications should keep an interval of at least 2 hours between doses.
Ulgastran and pregnancy and breastfeeding
If a woman is pregnant, plans to become pregnant or thinks she is pregnant, she should inform her doctor immediately. Ulgastran is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding or pregnant.
Ulgastran and driving
The drug does not adversely affect the patient, and by taking it, you can drive vehicles.
Taking Ulgastran
The drug should be used primarily as prescribed by the doctor. Read the leaflet carefully before use. Usually, it is recommended to use one gram 4 times a day and half an hour before each meal or bedtime. The drug is administered orally and should be washed down with plenty of water. Treatment should not be interrupted for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
Possible side effects
Side effects may occur during treatment with this drug, but need not. Most often, patients complain of: indigestion, fatigue, diarrhea or vomiting. There have also been cases of skin allergy and facial swelling.
You should report any side effects to your doctor immediately.
What does Ulgastran contain?
The active ingredient in this drug is sucralfate. Other ingredients included in the preparation are: purified water, vanillin, saccharin, sodium, citric acid, lemon oil, sorbitol, hypromellose, simethicone emulsion 30%, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, glycerol.
The drug is white in color, with a lemon scent. Always shake the suspension well before administration. One package contains 250 ml of the substance placed in an amber glass bottle.
