Zofran is a prescription drug. It is used preventively during nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or the postoperative period.
What is Zofran and when should it be used?
The active substance in this medicine is ondansetron. I am a substance that belongs to the anti-emetic. Zofran’s task is to inhibit the 5 ht3 receptor. It is used in adults to stop the vomiting processes caused by cancer radiotherapy or chemotherapy. It is also used immediately after surgery for the same purpose. The drug can also be seen in children and adolescents. Each person must undergo thorough diagnostics in order to implement the treatment of this drug.
Who shouldn’t use Zofran?
The drug should not be used if a person is allergic to the active substance. It should not be given to patients who are taking apomorphine in parallel. Before starting treatment, the doctor should carefully interview the patient and find out about all diseases, such as intestinal obstruction, causes of liver disease, or the use of other medications.
Zofran and other drugs
The doctor should know about the medications taken by the patient in parallel. You should also notify about dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications. In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking: tramadol, ketoconazole, erythromycin, heart medications, carbamazepine or phenytoin, or about medicines used in cancer.
Zofran, pregnancy and breastfeeding
A pregnant woman must not use this medication as it may negatively affect the fetus. If the patient suspects that she is pregnant, tests to confirm her pregnancy should be performed. As for breastfeeding, it is also not recommended while taking this drug.
How is Zofran used?
On the first day of taking the drug, it is given by a nurse or doctor into a muscle or into a vein. Subsequent dosages may be in the form of syrup or tablets. The doctor decides this individually.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Zofran can also cause side effects, but not necessarily. The patient may get allergic reactions like rashes, facial swelling, swollen tongue or mouth. Headache, constipation, sudden hot, reddening of the skin are often noticed.
How to store Zofran?
The drug should be kept out of the sight and reach of children and should not be used after the expiry date. The drug should be stored at temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius and must be protected from light and moisture.
What does Zofran contain?
One ampoule contains 4 milligrams of the active ingredient – ondansetron. The drug also includes: sodium citrate, sodium chloride and citric acid monohydrate. As for the solution, it is clear and odorless. This solution is available in 2 ml and 4 ml ampoules.
