Find out how the moon affects your sleep

This exercise will help you find out if the quality of your sleep is related to the activity of the moon. Its implementation does not require any effort, except for a little patience.

The moon causes the ebb and flow of the sea, energizes plants (medicinal herbs are still harvested on the full moon, when they have the most useful substances), helps women in childbirth (a surge in fertility is often observed on the full moon), and even, as analysts have calculated1, influences the dynamics of world financial market indices… And even though werewolves who are reborn on a full moon live only in legends, many of us can physically feel the power of the moon, often without even knowing it. Its effect on our condition is close to how electromagnetic waves from antennas, household electrical appliances and wi-fi routers act on us. We all have different sensitivities to invisible forces of this kind. Someone does not feel them at all, someone’s state they change noticeably. To find out if you belong to the “moon-dependent” people, we suggest doing this simple exercise.

Get a notebook where you will record observations of your own sleep. This will take no more than two minutes every morning, but you need to keep records for at least three months. During this period, do not check the lunar calendar to avoid the placebo effect. Immediately after waking up, notice:

  • What time did you fall asleep and wake up. If you woke up at night, when did it happen;
  • how you slept (on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a sleepless night, 10 is a deep restorative sleep);
  • what kind of dreams did you have in terms of this kind: stormy, wonderful, realistic, tiring, implausible, disturbing;
  • what mood do you have when you wake up: fighting, joyful, depressed, incomprehensible …

After three months, review your notes and note the most restless nights when you fell asleep and woke up later than usual, the quality of sleep was in the range from 1 to 5; dreams were disturbing and tiring; the mood upon awakening was unimportant, there was no energy either … Then take the lunar calendar and check what phase the moon was in on these difficult nights. If they fell on the period of the full moon (the four days before the full moon and four days after the full moon are also considered), then it looks like you are “moon dependent”. If insomnia appeared at another time, then the cause must also be sought elsewhere.

If you are “moon addicted”, during the week of the full moon, pay more attention to preparing for sleep: eat dinner earlier and with lighter meals, do not drink alcohol in the evening and choose quiet activities. At least an hour before going to bed, stop any intellectual work, turn off the computer, TV and mobile phone, dim the lights. Relaxing essential oils such as chamomile or lavender promote restful sleep. It is good to apply them with massage movements on the solar plexus area half an hour before bedtime. Shops like L’Occitane and The Body Shop sell relaxing bedroom sprays that contain a blend of essential oils. They need to be sprayed on bed linen and curtains. Herbal verbena or mint tea with a spoonful of honey will also help calm you down. Also, make sure the room is not too stuffy or hot. The optimal temperature for sleeping under a blanket is 16-19 degrees.
