Fetus in fetu. Unusual twin pregnancy

The Colombian gave birth to a “pregnant” child. The cesarean section was performed twice: first for the mother, and a day later for the newborn girl. A second fetus was withdrawn from the baby’s abdomen.

Monica Vega from Barranquilla, Colombia, found out during an ultrasound performed two months before birth that she had two umbilical cords. Doctors concluded that her unborn daughter has absorbed a second fetus inside the uterus. The two fetuses then joined the umbilical cord. Surgeons performed an emergency cesarean section because they feared the parasitic twin could damage the organs of the developing baby. The next day, they performed a caesarean section on the newborn. The second fetus was successfully removed. Doctors hope that there will be no further complications and that the girl will develop properly.

Fetus in fetu – the fetus in the fetus

An internally parasitic fetus is an extremely rare developmental abnormality, referred to in Latin as fetus in fetu. It occurs when one twin stops growing during pregnancy but is physically attached to the other, developing twin. It usually occurs in the course of monozygotic twin pregnancy and single conjunctival twin pregnancy. How is fetus in fetu created? This usually happens in the early stages of embryo development. In the second week, the blastocyst divides from fertilization, which gives rise to a twin pregnancy. However, the division is not working properly. One of the twins is smaller and weaker than the other and is therefore absorbed by the other.

Fetus in fetu in adults

Fetus in fetu is usually detected immediately after a baby is born or in early childhood. However, there are cases when doctors recognize this rare developmental defect in an adult, especially if it does not show any clinical symptoms. This year in India it was found fetus in fetu in a teenagerwho presented to the hospital with abdominal pain. Even after eating small portions of food she felt full. Computed tomography showed that the girl’s abdominal cavity had a large mass of tissue containing bones and tooth-like structures. Fetus in fetu is sometimes confused with tumors in the abdominal cavity. In the case of the 27-year-old, reported by researchers at the University of Illinois in 2001, the “twin”, which at first appeared to be a tumor, measured 14 cm and weighed 754 g. He had a spine formed on which the skull rested. The tissue structure also showed the upper and lower limbs, and even the nails and the eye.

It has been described in the medical literature so far about 200 cases of fetus in fetu. A child who has “absorbed” his twin is born once in half a million births.

The editorial board recommends:

  1. Teratomas – the strangest of cancers
  2. The surrogate will give birth to the sixteenth child. And she announced that she was going to “retire”
  3. Problems in pregnancy. Antiphospholipid syndrome
