Fetal neck translucency – reliability of the test result

How reliable is the result of the nuchal translucency of the fetus in the 12th week of pregnancy?

Could a blood test done 15 + 5 weeks pregnant for Down’s syndrome be more reliable?

~Madga

The measurement of nuchal translucency between 11-13 and 6 weeks of pregnancy has been found to be a reliable marker for calculating the probability of Down’s syndrome. In some doctor’s offices, during an ultrasound scan, the computer calculates the baseline risk of Down syndrome and the final risk after entering the results of the ultrasound scan. During the ultrasound examination, the presence of the even nasal bone is also assessed. This is another risk parameter for Down syndrome. However, it should be remembered that neither neck translucency nor hormonal tests give 100% certainty of a healthy or sick child. They only allow you to calculate the risk (probability) of such a syndrome. If there are doubts after the nuchal translucency test, of course, hormone tests should be performed at a later date.
