Ferrum lek is a medical preparation that is used to replenish iron deficiency in the body. Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia, and symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and stress-related symptoms. What are the indications and contraindications for the use of Ferrum Lek? How to use this medical product correctly?

Ferrum lek – characteristics of the preparation

Ferrum Lek is a preparation available in tablets, the main ingredient of which is iron. There is iron in the drug in the form of iron (III) hydroxide with a carbohydrate polymer, polymaltose. The main task of polymaltosis is to protect the gastrointestinal tract and stomach against the harmful effects of iron. This compound also inhibits the effect of food on iron. The structure of iron (III) hydroxide with polymaltose is very similar to that of a naturally occurring protein that stores iron in the body, i.e. ferritin. This similarity causes the iron supplemented with Ferrum to penetrate into the blood as a result of natural processes. Iron is a very important component in building red blood cells, muscles and enzymes. The deficiency of this element in the human body leads to many disorders that prevent everyday functioning. Iron deficiency causes chronic fatigue, lack of concentration, irritability, nervousness, headaches, susceptibility to stress, loss of appetite, brittle hair and nails, as well as dry skin and its unnatural pallor.

Ferrum lek – indications and contraindications to use

The indication for the use of Ferrum Lek is the treatment of latent iron deficiency. This drug is recommended in the case of anemia, with the so-called overt iron deficiency. Ferrum Lek is also indicated for pregnant women to prevent iron deficiency. Unfortunately, not every patient with iron deficiency can use Ferrum Lek. Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the preparation is a contraindication to the use of the drug. It must also not be used if the patient has an excessive amount of iron in the body, known as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis. The drug is not used in people with a disorder of iron incorporation into hemoglobin, for example in anemia caused by lead poisoning. Contraindication to the use of Ferrum Lek is also anemia, which was not caused by iron deficiency. Such a case may be anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.

Ferrum Lek – correct dosage

Ferrum Lek should be used according to the doctor’s instructions. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the degree of iron deficiency in the patient’s body. The recommended dose of Ferrum Lek is one tablet a day. The tablet should be taken with or immediately after a meal. The dose of the drug can be divided into smaller portions or taken at once. Ferrum Lek tablets should be swallowed whole. You can also chew them. Treatment for latent iron deficiency takes one to two months. For anemia, treatment can last three to five months, with doses being relatively higher. The daily dose is one to three tablets a day.
