Feeding the 9 month old baby

Feeding the 9 month old baby

9 months: baby has spent as much time in your womb as outside! His teething may make him grumpy, but your child is still curious about new experiences. Depending on its development, you will also be able to introduce it to the joys of juicy fruits and tender vegetables in small pieces.

Meals for the 9 month old baby

From the age of 9 months, baby knows better and better how to chew food: even if you still offer mashed potatoes, you have started to introduce crushed or ground food. If you feel like it is ready, you can start integrating the food in small pieces, while still remaining alert and close.

Food diversification is on track, with 4 meals a day, including 2 spoon-fed meals a day, in addition to the snack fruit and 2 bottles – unless you continue to breastfeed your baby, of course.

So, whether it is in terms of the number of meals per day or their composition, your child’s diet is really starting to get closer to that of the older ones: he eats at very regular times with a snack in addition to the three main meals. a day and eats almost everything.

As for the quantities, the meals with the spoon begin to be sufficiently copious and you will always adapt the volume of food to the appetite of your baby, without ever forcing it: like the adults, it is possible that certain days it has. less hungry and that should not worry you. And if he sulks a food, don’t insist: just present it with the same food a few days later.

Milk in the 9 month old baby

At 9 months, the baby should continue to drink almost half a liter of breast milk or 2nd age milk per day with 2 bottles of 210 to 240 ml of milk per day. But some babies refuse the bottle. In this case, there are several tips that can help you deal with the situation:

  • Start the meal with a bottle before introducing solid foods
  • Add cereal to the bottle in the morning and evening to change the taste. For lunch at afternoon tea, you can opt for an infant milk milk such as yoghurt, petits-suisse or fromage blanc.
  • If the baby has a big brother and / or a big sister, he may just want to drink like a big one. In this case, offer him his milk in a learning cup or glass, or in a bowl with a straw!

Either way, don’t be tempted to add a sweet product to baby’s milk such as honey, sugar or powdered chocolate, and keep buying 2nd age milk specifically tailored to their nutritional needs. As a reminder, cow’s milk and vegetable drinks are strongly discouraged.

In case of breastfeeding, it is rare for the child to refuse the breast, but you will most certainly observe that the duration of the feedings decreases as the baby evolves in his dietary diversification. However, you can express your milk to add breast milk to babies’ meals: mix it with ground vegetables, for example. Homemade dairy desserts made from breast milk are also possible.

What foods to introduce?

Food Discovery Continues: You can introduce your baby to slightly more special foods like mushrooms, celery and turnip if you haven’t already.

You can also add herbs to each of your baby’s meals, favoring fresh herbs to give your baby the benefit of their richness in vitamins: parsley, chives, basil, coriander, tarragon, etc. Also consider curry, turmeric, ginger and nutmeg, garlic and onions, in small amounts.

If you feel that your baby is ready and wanting, you can gradually change from thick, milled, or crushed foods to foods offered in small pieces.

For the vegetables:

Start by choosing the most tender vegetables, the ones you introduced first at the start of food diversification:

  • Carrots
  • Green beans, flat coconut beans
  • Spinach
  • courgettes
  • Leek white
  • Beet
  • Eggplant
  • Pumpkin, pumpkin, buternut squash, etc.

For starchy foods:

You can now offer the potatoes and sweet potato in small pieces to your baby, as long as they are well cooked.

For other starchy foods, all can be offered, but always well cooked:

  • Riz
  • Alphabet pasta type pasta or other pasta cut into small pieces
  • Peas
  • Quinoa Salad
  • Bulgur
  • Tapioca
  • Wheat (Ebly® type)
  • Mixture of cooking cereals

You will also make your child happy by offering them croutons of bread!

For proteins: viandes, fish, eggs

From now on, baby can eat all types of meat and fish, while avoiding cold meats (except cooked ham) and breaded fish. Regarding eggs, at 9 months, you can now offer the white of the egg, in addition to the yolk.

However, remain vigilant on the quantities because the recommendations are: 15 to 20 g in total per day, the equivalent of 3 to 4 teaspoons of meat or fish, or a little more than 1/4 of an egg hard (white + yellow).
