Febrisan Tabs – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Febrisan Tabs is used for the short-term treatment of the symptoms of colds and flu. It is a combined preparation with analgesic, antipyretic and vasoconstrictive properties. One capsule of the preparation contains paracetamol, caffeine and phenylephrine hydrochloride. The drug is in the form of coated tablets and is available without a prescription.

Febrisan Tabs – indications for taking and dosage

Febrisan Tabs are tablets recommended for the treatment of short-term symptoms of colds and flu in the form of:

  1. chills
  2. muscle pains,
  3. sore throat
  4. headache
  5. runny nose and swelling of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses,
  6. fever.

Drug dosage

Febrisan Tabs is in the form of tablets to be taken by mouth. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the drug as it may endanger your life or health.

  1. Adults and children over 12 years of age Orally, after a meal. 1-2 tablets every 4-6 h, no more than 8 tabl./d.

Febrisan Tabs and contraindications

There are the following contraindications for taking Febrisan Tabs:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
  2. hypertension,
  3. aneurysms,
  4. overactive thyroid gland
  5. heart diseases,
  6. severe kidney failure,
  7. liver failure
  8. diabetes,
  9. congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase,
  10. taking MAO inhibitors now or in the last 14 days,
  11. treatment with beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants or zidovudine,
  12. angle-closure glaucoma,
  13. pregnancy,
  14. the period of breastfeeding,
  15. alcoholism,
  16. for use by children up to 12 years of age

Febrisan Tabs – warnings

  1. Do not use the drug for more than a week without the recommendation of a doctor.
  2. Make sure that any other medicines you take do not contain paracetamol to avoid overdosing.
  3. Do not exceed the recommended doses.
  4. Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment with the drug as there is a risk of toxic liver damage.
  5. Elderly patients: with renal failure, active ulcer disease, prostatic hyperplasia, Raynaud’s syndrome, increased intraocular pressure, pheochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, allergy to acetylsalicylic acid or taking drugs: anticoagulants, sedatives, sympathomimetic drugs (e.g. decongestants), appetite suppressants, amphetamine-like psychostimulants should be used with caution.
  6. There is an increased risk of liver damage in people with hepatic insufficiency, who are starved or abusing alcohol.
  7. Patients driving motor vehicles should be especially careful because the preparation may cause side effects in the form of dizziness, headaches and muscle tremors, which impair psychophysical fitness.

Febrisan Tabs with other drugs

  1. Paracetamol enhances the effect of coumarin derivative anticoagulants.
  2. The elimination time of paracetamol is prolonged by salicylamide.
  3. Do not take the drug with MAO inhibitors and within 2 weeks of completing treatment with these preparations, because the state of agitation and high fever may occur.
  4. Concomitant use of drugs that increase hepatic metabolism, such as rifampicin, antiepileptic drugs, some sleeping pills, or alcohol consumption may lead to liver toxicity despite the use of the recommended doses of the drug.
  5. Paracetamol in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs causes the risk of renal dysfunction.
  6. The drug increases the toxic effect of zidovudine.
  7. Metoclopramide accelerates, and propantheline delays the absorption of paracetamol from the gastrointestinal tract.
  8. Cimetidine, isoniazid, probenecid, ranitidine, propranolol prolong the working time of paracetamol, while caffeine increases its analgesic effect.
  9. Taking paracetamol may affect the results of laboratory tests (e.g. blood glucose tests).
  10. Phenylephrine contained in the preparation may reduce the effect of antihypertensive drugs (including the hypotensive effect of beta-blockers), methyldopa, reserpine. MAO inhibitors intensify and tricyclic antidepressants weaken the effect of phenylephrine.
  11. Taking the drug with indomethacin, beta-blockers, methyldopa may cause a hypertensive crisis, and taking the drug with digitalis glycosides may cause cardiac arrhythmias.
  12. Due to the caffeine content, administration of the preparation with sympathomimetics or thyroid hormones may increase tachycardia.
  13. Oral contraceptives, cimetidine, quinolones, verapamil slow down the metabolism of caffeine, while barbiturates accelerate it
  14. Caffeine delays the elimination of theophylline.

The use of Febrisan Tabs may cause the following side effects:

  1. itching
  2. hives
  3. rash,
  4. erythema,
  5. angioedema
  6. an attack of bronchial asthma,
  7. lowering blood pressure,
  8. anaphylactic shock,
  9. nausea,
  10. vomiting,
  11. abdominal pain,
  12. hepatic impairment,
  13. headaches and dizziness,
  14. insomnia,
  15. bow,
  16. anxiety,
  17. muscle tremors,
  18. irritability,
  19. inability to focus attention,
  20. slight increase in blood pressure,
  21. increased heart rate
  22. renal colic
  23. renal papillary necrosis,
  24. acute kidney failure,
  25. urolithiasis,
  26. urinary retention (especially in patients with an enlarged prostate gland),
  27. thrombocytopenia,
  28. agranulocytoza,
  29. methemoglobinemia.
