Febrisan is a drug used in family medicine to treat symptoms of colds and flu. The preparation affects the central nervous system, has analgesic and antipyretic properties, and also clears the nasal passages. Febrisan is available as an effervescent powder and is available without a prescription.

Indications for the use of Febrisan
Febrisan is a combined preparation with analgesic, antipyretic and vasoconstrictive properties. It is given for the short-term treatment of cold and flu symptoms in adults and children over 12 years of age.
Dosage: Orally. 1 bag every 4-6 hours, no more than 4 bags a day. Serve dissolved in a glass of hot water.
Febrisan and contraindications and warnings
Contraindications to the use of Febrisan are:
- hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
- hypertension,
- aneurysms,
- overactive thyroid gland
- heart diseases,
- severe kidney failure,
- liver failure
- diabetes,
- congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase,
- taking MAO inhibitors now or in the last 14 days,
- fenyloketonuria,
- treatment with beta-blockers,
- tricyclic antidepressants,
- angle-closure glaucoma,
- pregnancy, breastfeeding, alcoholism,
- do not use in children under 12 years of age.
Febrisan – warnings:
- Do not use with other drugs containing paracetamol; Due to the risk of overdose, check that other drugs do not contain paracetamol.
- The use of Febrisan in people with hepatic insufficiency, alcohol abusers or fasting people may be at risk of liver damage.
- Particular care should be taken in the case of renal failure, active ulcer disease, prostatic hyperplasia, increased intraocular pressure, the presence of phaeochromocytoma.
- Caution should be exercised in: the elderly, allergic to acetylsalicylic acid, taking anticoagulants, sedatives, sympathomimetic drugs (e.g. nasal decongestants), appetite suppressants, amphetamine-like psychostimulants.
- Do not drink alcohol during treatment.
- Febrisan contains sucrose.
- Patients with hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not use the preparation.
- People driving motor vehicles should be especially careful as the drug may cause side effects that may impair psychophysical fitness (e.g. dizziness and headaches).
Febrisan – interactions with other drugs:
- Febrisan contains 3 active substances, interactions of the preparation with other drugs may be caused by each of them.
- Paracetamol (one of the three active substances of the preparation) enhances the effect of anticoagulants from the coumarin derivative group.
- Do not use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days from the end of treatment with these preparations due to the possibility of agitation and high fever.
- The use of drugs that increase hepatic metabolism, such as rifampicin, antiepileptic drugs, sleeping pills (barbiturates) or the consumption of alcohol can cause toxic liver damage (which can lead to liver failure), even when using the recommended doses of paracetamol.
- The use of paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increases the risk of renal dysfunction.
- Phenytoin may reduce the effectiveness of paracetamol and increase the risk of liver toxicity.
- Probenecid, isoniazid, cimetidine, ranitidine, propranolol, salicylamide increase the elimination time of paracetamol.
- Take caution when using zidovudine. Metoclopramide accelerates and propantheline delays the absorption of paracetamol from the gastrointestinal tract.
- The use of paracetamol may affect the results of laboratory tests, for example, the determination of blood glucose or uric acid levels.
- Indomethacin, beta-blockers or methyldopa used simultaneously with phenylephrine (phenylephrine is another active substance in the preparation) may cause a hypertensive crisis.
- Phenylephrine may reduce the hypotensive effect of beta-blockers, antihypertensive drugs, methyldopa, reserpine.
- The use of digitalis gicosides increases the risk of developing cardiac arrhythmias.
- Tricyclic antidepressants may reduce the effect of phenylephrine.
- Ascorbic acid (another active substance contained in the preparation) increases the rate of excretion of amphetamine derivatives and tricyclic antidepressants.
- In high doses it may affect the results of some laboratory tests (e.g. measurement of glucose or creatinine in blood and urine).
Febrisan – side effects:
The following may occur: malaise, drop in blood pressure up to shock symptoms, allergic reactions (pruritus, urticaria, rash, erythema, angioedema), asthma attack, increased heart rate, headache and dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, impaired function liver and kidney disease (up to liver and kidney failure), thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, neutropenia.
